Being a high school teacher sounds like a blast. I just wish as an American the pay wasn't so low and the disrespect wasn't so bad. I just imagine a bunch of failed dnd persuasion and intimidation checks over and over for a teacher's first couple years until they adapt or die.

Nice rant at the end lol. In 3rd grade had one teacher literally loudly yell at me from across the room cuz I was just daydreaming for a few seconds. He was one of the strictest teachers I ever had, and while obviously it’s good to be disciplined you don’t have to be that intense with a 7 year old. I was always told strict teachers were the better ones but looking back on it, it doesn’t excuse them of being an ass towards kids.

Oh man, I was only ever a dick to a professor one time in college and it's probably one of the most cringe worthy moments in my life. I disagreed with him on a very fundamental level because he believed paper writing required a more mathematical kind of approach. I came super close to saying shit that probably could have gotten me in serious trouble. Gave me a mental breakdown. But I talked about the issue with my peers. Learned from it. Understood that disagreements with someone doesn't justify ill behavior. Treat your teachers and professors with respect everyone. ✌️

Sometimes I think it’s because he was Mexican and once you hear the horror stories of what teachers were like in Mexico back in the days…whew. My mother would recount how teachers would rip up your homework if it was sloppy and have you start over 😬

lol in middle school I spaced out in one particular class so often that both the students and the teacher developed the habit of calling out to me in unison so I would snap out of it 😭 my daydreaming was way worse in elementary school so I would not have survived your teacher lmao

Nice high school teacher tangent - As for me, I spent a large part of my career teaching at boarding high schools - including living in and sharing duty of running a dorm of about 40 students. Adding in that aspect of lights out, being on duty 24 hours straight at least one weeknight and one weekend a month, and driving kids to the hospital and what not was a lot. Kids usually didn't talk back in class much (they saved that for dorm rooms or the dining hall where they thought we couldn't hear them) I never locked my door to my classroom to keep kids out. Locking the door for that matter just wasted class time because you had to deal with it. Just mark them late or have the kid bring a note from their sending teacher and be done with it. If my door was locked for some reason (usually a lab setup), I just had another student let them in. The dorms had an electronic card swipe lock that Campus Safety set to lock automatically at 10pm, but that's a whole other thing, haha.

To be able to walk away in the face of such idiocy... that takes discipline Story time: I had a colleague who was finishing his bachelors in education. He told me that kids need corporal punishment. He said that he looked up to his teachers who whipped kids in front of the class, making a lesson out of them to the rest. Needless to say, I disagreed. He taught one class for 6 months and then changed careers, thank god

man i hated those time limits, especially when they set up classess at ends of the school grounds, i was at one of the largest "legally" allowed highschools in cypress, and they had out buildings at one end of the school lot, not even the school itself, and i had a class at one followed by a class at the other end of the main school building, at a LITERAL jog with no interruptions, and no hold up i could just about make it, and i couldn't jog every single day so many days id be allitle late, and the damn teacher would write me up. and i would try to explain this to them, and they gave no shits. going over the equivalent of 2 tennis courts, a football field and stands, and then a soccer pitch, plus up 3 flights of stairs, because of course. still pisses me off lol
