Fun episode that spawned a tangent Tony in the middle AND the end

SKAOG

There's 4 Seasons, and a movie (and a few OVAs)

SKAOG

I'd say the end is less of a tangent and more of your thoughts, since its relevant to your forte of music, and a new genre of sports that you're now watching. People are here for your music knwoledge after all. (although it's becoming more of a tangent the more i listen to it as i'm typing this out) damn this might be the biggest tangent yet, was wondering why this reaction was 32 mins (all good of course)

SKAOG

yeah it kept on getting longer while i was writing it, at first when i was typing out there was 0 tangent, but it kept on veering away from sports and music to your story, although it kind of came back at the end. Also I forgot to mention it, but there's like 3 OVAs which are also relevant to the story and not just goofing around episodes. i dont have the watch order at hand, but people will probably inform you. Not watching them makes it feel like something's missing

With 1 more movie to cap off the series that’ll probably come out next year

To sort of answer your question about high schools. Basically, school in Japan is only mandatory up to grade 9. To get into an upper secondary school (i.e. high school) you have to take an exam unique to each school. The tough schools have crazy difficult exams and the regular schools have pretty basic exams. Its certainly not uncommon to get into a school pretty far from where you live. Even in this anime Hinata literally lives on the opposite side of a mountain and has to bike like 40 minutes to get to school.

Oh that is interesting. Does anyone know the % of kids that keep going past grade 9 vs entering work?

FTN Chicken

As I understand, basically everyone still goes to high school, but since its not so standardized like in the US, certain schools might specialize in certain things or they might offer 4/5 year programs, which would be equivalent to getting an associate’s degree in the states

Jet Man

Plot Twist: the new coach turns out to be Pete Carroll.

Lixien

There is a Volleyball coach (Elevate Yourself) that reacted to the show and just decided to call Oikawa "K-Pop"

Unbeknownst Man

The more Haikyu!! episodes I see you react to, the more I feel like you'd like watching Slam Dunk, one of my fav series of all time.

Yeah... I love Tangent Tony. It's just great to reflect about the anime, have the space for it and then being able to connect the more abstract elements of the anime with really personal stuff. It brings the ideas of the anime really down to earth. I wonder if Hinata's excitement and resolve resonate with some big dreams you might still having.

Also there's 4 seasons, the first two are like 20+ episodes, the third one is only 10, the 4th one is also 20+ episodes and then there's a movie (there's still plans for more, the adaptation is not finished yet )

Red Menace

freakin jim hensen and tangent tony in the same episode, lets go, detlef getting some

Red Menace

lol, was looking for this, id also add that alot of high schools are feeders into colleges, like certain high schools have a higher chance of getting into certain colleges. Id also add that there is a certain amount of teenagers that get there own apt, co-signed and paid for by their parents of course, that are close to their school if they are far enough away, just because there are high schools that if you can get into will set you up for life, similar to how there are certain colleges that look perfect on a resume here in the states.

Red Menace

and i will add that they also have more voc tec and speciality schools in japan, like every school has the basics, ie math, language, etc., but some of them are super specialized. ex. in japan prefectures are basically the equivalent of states, and one of those prefectures is that big island to the north, Hokkaido, and Hokkaido is like California in alot of ways, alot of resources, lots of natives that got taken over and put into "settled" areas, and super big for ag, so they have alot of specialiaty ag high schools that focus heavy on farming and livestock raising. There's even an anime called silver spoons that is based on life experience from someone who was raised in Hokkaido about that lol.

Regarding high school in Japan, most students go to high schools in the same or adjacent prefectures to the one in where they live. However, high schools that have strong teams in certain sports (e.g., baseball) may have students from far away, in which case they often live in student dorms.
