Honestly I think we mostly see her the MC's view and I took that seen as her being terrified for her daughter in a positive way. MC seems like a good kid so her mom probably doesn't suck as much as it seams. step dad might be a cool guy too. A lot of the conflict is very much stuff that would be fueled by children's understanding of things and the writer doesn't strike me as a stooped person.
