I am so glad this got voted on. Epic story to watch unfold. Cool to see the cultural side of the Ainu shown in this. Asipira is pretty cool! The world of VA is small, so it's always a trip to hear Kenjiro Tsuda in another character. My mind's eye always goes to Money Bags or Nowak, but I will make room in my head for another. LOL Sugimoto and the escape artist were so close to death... can you imagine how cold that would have been. No thank you! Whoooooooo is the guy with the head mask??? Looking forward to finding out

Japanese is 100% phonetic, meaning the way you pronounce each syllable is always the same, unlike English. Kamuy is 3 separate syllables: ka(カ), mu(ム), i(イ). pronounced KAH-moo-ee. Stress on the first syllable.

GoatZ

Again, I disagree on the pronunciation of the mu and the i. Kana correspond to mora in linguistics, they are not syllables. At least in natural spoken Japanese and Ainu, Kamuy is 2 syllables, not 3. The tongue moves into a glide when pronouncing the “i”, not a full distinct vowel. Similar to how “hai” is pronounced kinda like the English word hi and not ha-ee. The u is also not like a moo. It’s closer to the u in “pull” but it’s hard to describe in English since we don’t really have the sound.

GoatZ

For Tony: honestly just go to Google Translate, select Japanese, type in “kamui” and press the listen button. It’s the closest you’ll get, although it’s not super natural. Apologies for my linguistics bs 😭💀

I don't think that you're wrong at all, but I would argue that it's not really necessary for Tony to pronounce everything perfectly. kah-moo-ee is the generally accepted layman's way of pronouncing it i think. Indigenous people's languages is always gonna be a blowup.

Golden Kamuy Real Life Japanese History Context Note #1: Hijikata Toshizo Is A Real Person The real Hijikata Toshizo was known as the "Demon Vice Leader of the Shinsengumi". In 1868, just 15 years after the United States forced Japan to open its borders, a coalition of young samurai and nobles fought against the ruling Tokugawa shogunate in order to return control to the emperor. This is known as the Boshin War, or the Japanese Civil War. The Shinsengumi were a group of armed men who enforced the laws within Japan's capital on behalf of the shogun, so when the war broke out, they fought with the Tokugawa Shogunate against the Imperial coalition. The Imperial forces were victorious and the remnants of the Tokugawa shogunate and the Shinsengumi were defeated in 1869 at the Battle of Hakodate. Hijikata Toshizo was supposed to have died during that very battle, but his body was never found...

I think it’s best to stick with the Japanese pronunciation of the word. It’s the most easiest for English speakers anyway
