The band version of the opening gave me goosebumps!

BlakStatik23

At the end of the episode when they were walking in the court that was the band version of the OP it was really cool to catch the first time. I love that Yachi joined bc all the boys consider Kiyoko this ethereal being instead of just a regular person so Yachi is the first person she’s been able to actually relax around. It took us 4 seasons to finally hear about her life lmaooo

Japan has a very superstitious culture and they take it to the MAX on New Years. We kick off with the "First Dream" of the year which is said to determine your course of the upcoming year, which is why Daichi got super depressed about the dream he saw. At Tanaka's house you saw them eating a traditional New Year's Meal which is filled with puns and symbolism (a golden chestnut paste so that you will be blessed with riches, fish eggs so you'll be blessed with fertility, black beans so that you can work hard and get "beans," which is what blisters are called in Japan, on your hands, etc.). Then you saw the guys playing a badminton like sport with wooden paddles. That's called "Hanetsuki" which is a game to "swing away" bad fortunes and spirits. The point is to keep the rally going and if you drop it, then the penalty is for the others to draw on your face. This is done to induce the "First Laugh" of the year which is to set the year off right by bringing in good tidings and vibes. Finally, the volleyball tournament is called the "Spring" tournament despite being held in January because Spring is associated with new starts and new beginnings (flowers blossoming, animals coming out of hibernation, birds migrating back, etc.) so another way to say the "New Year" is Japan is the "New Spring".

Just a slight correction, the Spring Tournament is called that because it DID originally take place in March, but was changed to January to allow graduating students (especially top prospects) to compete one more time before finishing high school. That said your comment on spring's cultural significance is still otherwise accurate!
