While LT Tsurumi may have seemed silly on our end for not being more direct, you can see that Tanigaki understood and appreciated the gesture. It was clear it was meant to be an inviting and kind one and to offer him a chance to make a bit of home for a place that he (Tsurumi) wanted him (Tanigaki) to feel at home at. It's said multiple times that Tsurumi has a way with getting people to warm up to him (thought let Ogata talk about it, he's like a snake oil salesman).

Rewatching this it really strikes me how much this and Vinland Saga have in common thematically. Both shows that explore what happens to warriors when the war stops.

Surprised you didn't notice, but Sugimoto is the man who tells Tanigaki about Kenkichi (His brother in law). Sugimoto's the soldier that Tanigaki gave Walnut Mochi to.

You didn't recognise him, but the guy Tanigaki gave food to in the trench was Sugimoto. He said he recognised Tanigaki's accent, and said he met a guy with a similar accent the night before.

Top tier reaction, just like always! Thanks for the uploads, your schedule is insane compared to other creators ngl

I think some of the best episodes in anime are ones like this, where it's a single episode in a larger story, but the episode itself is more like it's own self contained short story. Also why backstories in anime are some of the most satisfying parts, because it's one of the few places you actually get resolution besides major plot climaxes or the true end of a series
