Thank you for the support and for checking out my reaction to this movie! It means a lot 🙏WOW 😟😭I knew based on the summary I read going into this, that it would be a rough one. They did such a great job with writing a ... lol, horribly frustrating/painful/moving movie that makes you feel so bad for the character(s). Sheeeeesh! Ya'll will laugh at the first segment in this reaction when I commented about how we had another setting of a classroom in anime in which a new student comes in. She shows her notebook and explains how she would like folks to use it to talk to her, and I was like, "Wow, this is some variety where we have a positive environment where the kids are not just auto bullies." LMAO I have never eaten my words so quickly in a movie as this one. That made me laugh a lot. I’m gonna keep this short here in case anyone is jumping in for their first watch. I did go pretty in-depth at the end after the credits, talking through my experience with the film and some of my takeaways.

The OST was absolutely incredible. The dynamic range and volume shifts tied in perfectly with the film’s themes around hearing and perception. I even mentioned at one point that it reminded me a bit of Chainsaw Man, and sure enough…got on google to find

👉The soundtrack for A Silent Voice (Koe no Katachi) was composed by Kensuke Ushio.LOL - it's possible that some of you told me that previously in comments, but I 100% forgot. Thanks again for watching with me. See you on the next anime movie vote soon!

Love the call out on Kawai's bs. Not a lot of reactors get how much of a hypocrite she is. Atleast Ueno was upfront with her bs. I'd personally rather deal with that

2026-10-08 07:00 I hope one day dangers in my heart makes it to the cringe tier patreon, its a middle school romcom but its very good and the composer is kensuke Ushio, and together with this movie i think its by far his best work

2026-10-08 07:00 The movie had to cut a lot from the manga but in the manga the teacher was way worse, it got to the point where The friend with red hair actually socked him when they met again older I definitely recommend you check out the manga, the same big moments are there but theres more than enough extra content to consider it a whole new story, Like an entire plotline about them starring in a play being missing

Not so fun fact: the teacher was way worse in the manga. the movie obv cut some stuff out due to time constraints like the ending, but also things like the teacher actually laughing under his breath when Shoya made a joke about Shoko when they were bullying her, as well as an interaction Shoya had with the teacher that took place after the movie. He hadn't changed one bit and implied Shoko was to blame as the class "drew the short straw" and that the bullying was "unavoidable". I've watched this movies probably over 20 times and there's way more stuff that made me wish they cut less of those moments out, but It's still one of my favourite movies OAT.

Infernape Gamer

oh damn, I literally commented the same thing lmao

So happy you looked at this. I know you’ll post another poll but I can not wait for you to look at “Your Name” as well. Both this movie and Your Name are incredible, and both sit firmly in my Top 10 or ALL movies, not just anime movies. Your Name specifically sits in my Top 5, and its soundtrack, dare I say it, is better than A Silent Voice. I really believe you will love Your Name’s soundtrack (you’ve listened to a couple of its songs already). Ty for another great reaction as always!

Loved the input at the end about your own experience with the kind of bullying throughout the movie. It’s not something many reactors I’ve seen have experience with to provide new insight. This story is very interesting with how it expresses the characters motivations that lead to all of the conflict throughout. Glad to see you found it entertaining

Shucks

The production, both music and animation is incredible and when I heard Liz and the Bluebird essentially was a spiritual successor to this one with the same staff it made sense.

If I'm not mistaken, she got permanent hearing loss on the ear that he made bleed. There is a superstition that if you make a certain amount of paper cranes, you will gain health or a wish

mojhito5

couldn't agree more, on par with orb and a silent voice his work in dangers is phenomenal

mojhito5

fuck kawai all my homies hate kawai😭✌

At 1:20:44, when you mention that the main character seems unusually calm during that part of the video, I think the reason is that he knows in the past, he was the one who bullied her the most. He used to strongly dislike her expression and the way she was always apologizing. So he feels that he was no different from Ueno back then, he didn’t really know what to be truly angry about or even whether he had the right to be angry. Now he doesn’t agree with Ueno but he understands why she said what she did. Moreover I think what matters most to him is Shoko’s reaction to Ueno’s words and her excessive self-doubt because after all, he wants Shoko to love herself and be happy. That is both his act of atonement and his selfishness. That’s why near the end of the film, he said that he thought he understood her in ways that were convenient for him and apologized her

Sua

Seriously Kyoto Animation is truly on another level. I’ve watched a lot of anime, but the way they nail everything from the backgrounds, colors, art style in every single frame to the insanely smooth and detailed expressions and movements of the characters... its just something else. Crazy to think they can keep almost the same level of quality in their long series as they do in a movie like this

Alexiel

34:30 Maybe you were thinking of Apothecary Diaries? There was a character who couldnt recognize people's faces and saw them as Go stones (dont wanna spoil who in case someone reading hasnt seen it yet)

Haven’t rewatched this since the first time I saw it right after it came out…..I guess it’s time, happy to be here!

This movie is my favorite work of all time. It just runs so deep and there's so much subtle context to each behavior. I enjoy rewatching and seeing reactions to this film because there's always more, and every reaction points out something I hadn't realized before. I've held those same thoughts and tendencies for a very long time now, so that ending always gets me. I really hope to come to a similar feeling one day, and hope anyone sharing in that can as well, even if it's slowly. Thanks for watching this one Tony, I genuinely believe it belongs on the list of movies everyone should see. There's some interesting aspects to the music, how it was recorded and such that I'll link in the discord if you're curious.

mojhito5

This and Liz felt like the most intimate experiences I’ve ever had watching any piece of media. Naoko Yamada’s direction, Kensuke Ushio’s music, the art that you mention, backgrounds, facial expressions, everything… just otherworldly

mojhito5

Oh yeah, now that you mention it it is kinda similar lol

Ueno is an interesting character. She's an unapologetic bitch but she's also the only honest character there. All of the other characters had their problems because they were all lying to themselves about who they were and couldn't communicate what they wanted with each other, but she just says it straight. So weirdly the worst character there was the healthiest mentally. Also the show you were thinking about where their heads were all objects was probably Mob Psycho 100 where his crush's friends have vegetable heads.

The grandma dying hits harder in the manga. Because of their situation, Nishimiya's father left the family so the mother had to deal with raising their daughters by herself. Because of that, she was lacking in some aspects when it came to support them (for example, she didn't learn sign language) That's where grandma comes into play, she became the primary caretaker while the mother worked to financially support the family and gave them the emotional support they needed.

AttackRunRepeat

Shoko's mom is kind of terrible too. I understand being livid about the lost hearing aids but Ms. Ishida goes to pay her back the second she learns about it and Shoko's mom still rips Ms. Ishida's earring out of her ear. She's also super protective of the child she won't even learn sign language for. She tells Yuzuru to tell Shoko things. She doesn't communicate in sign language once through-out the film. And that's not uncommon for parents not to learn sign language when it's the only way their kid speaks.

Avalon

God this one always gets me

Avalon

There’s so much good stuff in this film, a lot of visual symmetry. Off the top of my head, the first time he sees her in present day and she runs away, he touches the hand railing she’s holding and the vibration is what makes her aware he’s there, and then after the hospital on the bridge it’s him touching the railing that makes her look up. Also on the bridge she cries to the Koi and the koi swims off to the distance immediately into Sho waking up, like it carried her tears to him. From the fake out bridge jump suicide in the beginning being cut off by the fireworks of a happy family whose day he doesn’t want to ruin to constant use of the X’s on faces throughout the film. It’s just so rich in every way that rewards rewatching again and again and again. I’ve always wondered in this anime why they actively never show his sister. Haven’t puzzled it out yet.

GardeninTool

Fun little fact about the OST for this movie from an interview with Ushio himself. Some of the songs, that I dont know the name of, for this soundtrack have a mic placed in a muffled piano. So the notes that are played, are muffled or even muted. In which case, only the vibrations of the note could be felt instead. This is supposed to reflect shouko's deafness.

drumrolltonyreacts

Yea that is great info because you could hear that implied style. What a great use of matching story to instrument use

Zach Harding

One of the things about this movie that really struck a chord with me is just how *human* the characters are, moreso than so much media out there. I think a huge part of what makes this movie hit so hard is the attention to detail in the characters, their distinct, nuanced personalities really bring the story to life.

Luxie

The adults are by far the biggest problem in this movie, like what do you MEAN you just threw a deaf kid into a normal classroom with zero accommodations?? Forcing her to rely on the kids to get her to learn anything at all… she was just an inconvenience to them and they started to resent her for it. Not to mention them not doing anything about the bullying until it came back to bite them with the hearing aids. I think this movie is an excellent showing of how damaging this attitude is and how it breeds self-hate in those caught in the fallout of this refusal to properly communicate with those that actually need help. Japan is the kind of place where if you can’t conform to normal society for whatever reason, it’s basically a you problem. It has been improving tho, with the help of representation like this movie.

drumrolltonyreacts

Yea that'd why I asked what year it was supposed to be. This wouldn't happen here rn. But I agree with everything you said

PandatheFur

As a first time watcher of this movie, wow. I have never seen anything about this movie before and when she started leaving after she said she needed to “study,” I was actively shouting at Ishida to stop her from leaving. And then she was on the railing. Let me just say I felt like my heart was gonna explode with that tension. Genuinely thought she was going to slip out of his hands.

Jarod S

Such a great film. There's so many little moments of visual storytelling and things you only catch on a rewatch but the story beats still hit just as hard.

Budoy

God i love this movie, im not sure if you notice around when their still kids, shoya actually trying to understand her at first, specially when the sign langauge teacher part, he actually tried to do it but got distracted by ueno, and also at the playground when hes trowing rocks at her hes trying to explaine the situation to her and looking out for her. atleast this is how the way i see it. thanks again for the reactionnnnn Grave of the fireflies nexttttt.

mojhito5

5th time watching this movie, crying as always. very personal movie for me. i know this feeling when the world feels unbearably loud, and this guilt just makes you want to cut yourself off, with everything that is unspoken and remains inside you turning you into "a silent voice". however, the continous acts of mustering up the courage to face the people they've hurt and helping each other to realize their own worth by both shoya and shoko is what change truly is. even if it feels fake at first (what ueno highlights), it is an attempt of building something geniune, or giving the intangible tangibility, or a shape. a "shape of voice". by finally creating this shape in the end, which is in the circle where shoya sees the faces of those he has grown to care about, a point of light opens up for shoya, and he feels like he has finally found a place where he can actually live. thus, we can hear his heartbeat along with the soundtrack (which is called "lit", which translates as "light"). shoya ishida, "a silent voice", was heard by shoko nishimiya, someone who wasn't able to hear at all. simply beautiful.

Anorus

Surprised this wasn't already answered, but the word for the moon is "tsuki" versus the word that you would use when saying that you like someone is "suki". Partially from this, there is a famous Japanese literary trope where if you say that the moon is beautiful while with your lover, it's a confession of love. So when Nishimiya says "suki", Ishida hears it as "tsuki", so there's irony where the audience realizes that it's a confession of love but Ishida does not (given that he assumes that everyone is detached from him).

zengei

It's easy to miss, but to clarify: Maria is Ishida's niece not sister. He has an older sister that has a couple of blink-and-you-miss-it moments in the movie. She's married to the black dude we see a couple of times, hence Maria's biracial appearance.

Edgar Lopez

i absolutely love your reactions man, you’re a goat 🐐

MfGoodnight

I think this movie shows a lot when it comes to being a bystander

Red Menace

@drumrolltony the childhood happens in 2008, the older versions are 2012-2013, the manga came out in 2011, so that's the split. I love this movie, its very much in the category of, its not entertaining, but a true experience, in this case an experience in empathy. Also i have to agree with the other commenters, pretty much all the issues have to do with the adults in the room, like how exactly would you expect children to react? especially in a society like japans, it made me laugh when they said "we are going to spend '3 MINUETS' each day to learn sign language." and the teacher standing off to the side like "why are we wasting our time.)

Red Menace

im trying to remember if tony has watched tokyo godfathers yet, man, id love to see his reaction to that

Red Menace

lol, the word for "moon" and "i love you" are very very similar in japanese so if you talked with a thick accent it could sound the same, although that word is never translated 100% accuratly
