I absolutely loved reading Golden Kamuy as it was coming out because moments like these were just made better with the anticipation. The anime has kept that same energy and reliving it animated has been killer.

Also in the fandom, moments like these is why "Stupid Sexy Ogata" rings out in the fandom. Like that Simpsons episode.

Sugimoto said he wanted Ogata to live to ask him stuff, but I think the main reason he wanted him to live was for Asirpa's sake, since she shot the arrow that put him in critical condition. He said right when it happened that he wouldn't let Ogata make her a murderer. And when the doctor said Ogata was done, Asirpa was visibly upset, so he was right that it would have hurt her. When he found out Ogata escaped, he seemed almost excited to tell Asirpa.

Great conclusion to the arc. Wonder where it goes from here. Also, with the doctor. Since Ogata now apparently speaks russian (which he had been hiding), maybe he had already said something to the doc to get him to lie to the group and say he was dying so he could escape? Doesn't make much sense though since he ends up attacking the doc anyway. Just some anime magic I guess lol. Happy he's still around though as he makes for a great villian

We don't know when Ogata took the nurse hostage, so likely he grabbed the nurse, told the Dr to go out there and say he was about to die. Then when the Dr came back in he either actually wounded him, or just had the Dr fake it because he was holding the nurse hostage. Presumably from the moment Ogata woke up and was able to take the nurse hostage, the Dr was basically working for Ogata
