I think most people don't care about the bass because it often plays a supporting role in the song, so it doesn't stand out as much and on top of that it's actually just harder comparatively to hear when you have drums, guitars or keyboards on top. Now imagine all that while listening on phone speakers, there might as well be no bass playing. Maybe that's also the reason slap bass is so much more popular. It actually stands out and is more easily audible in the song and "looks cooler". All of that to say, bassists deserve more love.
