Great episode. Nice to see the relationship between mentor(s) and student develop. Especially good for Ippo to see how difficult the training is for the adults around him who are doing the type of matches that he wants to eventually do. Takamura is a massive influence. Huge W at the end! The mature challenge has been set! Let's go!

Unbeknownst Man

That scene with Takamura at night having the hunger pains is so intense, but so accurate! Moreso when it comes to higher level (pro) competitions and people who must meet a specific weight requirement whilst being on a higher weight class in normal circumstances. I have several cousins who were part of the national martial arts teams and one of them, who was part of the Judo national team (in my home country, not US) had similar issues. Because he was so tall, his weight class was "naturally" one or two above the one he'd compete, but usually teams use that to their advantage when competing to have a bit of an edge in terms of "body size to strength ratio", although it's hard to meet the weight limits the bigger you naturally are, of course. The thing is, for this one competition, he drunk a whole bottle of water in the morning, "bloated up" enough to get around an extra pound and a half of water weight so he was over the limit and it was the "weigh-in day" (usually a day or so before the competition itself) and he had to run many laps to sweat the extra weight off and barely made it to regulation limits. He eventually went up weight classes, so it was way more manageable to maintain regulation weight, but Takamura's struggle shown in the anime is very real, at least based on the real case scenarios I've seen.

Ippo's such a classic. Lots of great stuff to look forward to in this one

From what I understand, in Japan the heavyweight class lacks real competition. Takamura natural weight class is heavyweight so, to climb as a pro boxer, he has no choice but to compete in lower weight classes. So he has to go into ridiculous diets to meet the requirements. If Takamura was competing in a weight class that matches his natural weight he wouldn't need to diet THIS hard.

Well well well, time to say a couple things about dieting and Takamura. Takamuras routine is absolutely insane, but its also very much from the late 80s and early 90s. Nowadays, pro boxers usually have nutritionists and strength coaches, so instead of basically starving themselves and dehydrating as much as possible, they diet gradually over a few weeks, keep their protein high to hold onto muscle, and then only cut water during the last few days before the weigh-in. Takamura pretty much does the old school version, barely eats, barely drinks, trains like a maniac, and sweats out every gram he can. Itss incredibly brutal, and while some fighters still do tough cuts today, theyre usually a lot more calculated. Whats crazy is that Takamuras natural walking weight is way heavier than the division he fights in. He is basically around 90 kg (about 200 lbs) or even more when hes not cutting, so he has to lose well over 15 kg (35lbs) just to make weight. Thats an absolutely ridiculous cut, even by boxing standards. The reason he doesnt just fight at heavyweight is actually pretty realistic. Back then (and even to this day lol...), Japan didnt really have many heavyweight boxers because the average Japanese athlete is naturally smaller than heavyweights from places like the US or eastern EU. So if Takamura wanted lots of fights and a real shot at climbing the ranks, it made way more sense to fight in lighter divisions first instead of jumping straight into heavyweight against guys who naturally walk around at 100–120 kg. Basically, Takamura is sacrificing comfort for opportunity. Instead of fighting guys his own natural size from day one, hes making huge weight cuts so he can dominate lighter divisions first and build his career. Its an extreme strategy, but for someone with his freakish physique, it makes sense in the context of the story. It also lets him use his biggest advantage, even after cutting weight, he is naturally larger, stronger, and has a longer reach than many opponents in those divisions. Things are about to get really interesting. No spoilers though! :p
