I'm waiting for my break to watch. But now do you see why just conjuring an extra sword doesn't work. It has to be something conjured with Nen, in a special way, with special conditions, to be effective. Just making extra ordinary weapons will fail.

"How does it know?" The rule is a self inflicted rule to increase power based on his resolve and is dependent on the nen user, it's not like the chain is like "independent" and knows who's a member or not. If he believes someone is a troupe member it will work. If he doesn't know someone is a troupe member beforehand or doesn't think someone counts as a troupe member and dedided to use it, it would kill him.

you can think of the chain dagger in his heart like a sort of representation of a conditional curse that he placed upon himself with nen where it boosts your attack power against certain opponents but if used elsewhere you die.

the details of how nen abilities work are usually explained later on, you should avoid reading too much explainatory comments on that since the functionment itself could spoil you ( or at least give you hints) on some parts of the story later on
