Yes. There is an excess amount of overly sentimental moments in this show. Ryu saying she deserves to die really isn't that much different from, "but I'm a prostitute." It gets exhausting. There are times where less is more and expressing the same point over and over doesn't make for a better story. It becomes lazy writing on the authors part. If one instrument plays the same melodic phrase over and over, I don't expect people to stay engaged. Variety is the spice of life and it needs different angles to pitch that it can't seem to find.

wouldn't say its lazy writing really since it is kinda the theme of the fellas work in general (hero that comes in to save the day) and there is a lot of subtle changes between the show and the source material which can flatten moments. but you are right though there is enough making a mile out of a meter stuff going on that takes away from the stuff that actually has impact.
