Hey everyone,

Winter is coming to an end on this side of the planet (Western Europe) and with it the second wave of lockdowns. But do you know what ain't gonna come to an end? Single-use facemasks we all had to become accustomed to.

To address this we have been working on a little research project to try to recycle this new massive waste stream into useful products. The first tests are very promising and want to ask you Patrons what product you would like to see made from them.

These blue facemasks that have become the norm across the globe are made from Polypropylene (yes, this might come as a surprise to many), a plastic that happens to work very well with our injection machine. We made some tests with a carabiner mould and the results are nice and smooth.

However, we've would like to give it a new spin and create something new and more valuable from those now-ubiquitous masks. Possibly something carrying a message.

Over to you patrons, what would you make if you could recycle these masks? Comment your genius ideas and moonshots below ♥️

Wow! Super cool! I love the colour! Could you shred them easily?

Jan Knappe

Yeah, I am also wondering about shreddability... :)

Maybe too deep, but if you could make an injection mould that could push out a pot for a pot plant, then you could use the symbolism of "Growing new life from those that protect life"? The company Elho makes plastic pots is the kind I was thinking about. Another idea, get a whole bucket load of masks, make a sheet, see if you can warp it around into a bin, then make a tiny slot that can fit a mask for recycling these specifically. Of course the difficult part is not catching corona whilst doing the recycling of the masks, but you know....

Masks represents closing in and loosing your freedom, so the reverse could be a good idea. Maybe some outdoor furniture, so people can gather and be social again.

I like the idea of turning these masks into faceshield frames. Or the pots for house plants. Or park benches. I had no idea they'd recycle that well, very cool!

If I had the tools I would make bird houses since wildlife was one of the things affected by the littering

Eatenribs

I would make more masks if I could, people is going nuts with masks right now and would be highly profitable.

I really would appreciate not making plastic products that will be in the outside, since all that micro plastic will pollute everything back

Can it be outdoor umbrella? You know, like the big ones you find outside of shops or sitting in the garden. It protects seats and us under the rain and hot days. I just don’t know if it gets torn on windy days. What do you think?

One Army

Yes, we're also very positively impressed by how well they work. Shredding is doable.

One Army

Good old Ben :) Pots would be easy to make the bin is a bit more challenging. Not catching corona is near impossible I guess..

One Army

Mmh.. challenging. The pole is probably too weak made from plastic while to make the fabric out of recycled plastic is beyond Precious Plastic scope for now.

How about 折れコンテナー foldable/ collapsible container ? I saw in Japan, recyclable trash, they usually put it in this foldable containers. On the days they’re not collecting, the containers can be stored indoor with very little space. It is usually blue in color too.
