Let's talk about when a new idea doesn't work.

I love @talitasami's colors. Most of her work is set in the 1970's and the muted colors give such a strong sense of time and place while creating some angst. I tend toward bright, saturated colors (and lots of them!), so I wanted to borrow her colors.

Aaand it didn't quite work out 🙃 I still gravitated toward more saturated colors and the final product doesn't quite fit the talitasami aesthetic. I set my skintone palettes for these characters about 2 years ago and they were just too bright for this project.

Studying talitasami's work inspired me to add more texture and noise. I used a splatter brush to add some interest to the sheets and background. I added a dust filter to make it a little moody, and topped it all with two overlays (one grunge and one watercolor for that grainy/ noisy texture). I don't know if I'll use this much texture in future works, but I do love how it turned out here.
