My Chinese friend Jiang does have a point, a part from the famous virus, how much do we really know about China? Or maybe people are merely afraid of the unknown?

Maybe... But I don't think a lot of people actually knows about the country apart from what we see on TV at the moment.

It’s one of those cultures that unless you are interested doesn’t really do it for you. Yet our lives are wrapped in all that china is. The products they are involved with are part of our daily lives and have been ever since Marco Polo if not before. The silk road is older that the pyramids.

This is a good point. When you think about it, that’s over a billion people that we are sort of ignorant about in way or another, that’s a huge amount. Also PS, Joe’s pecs are mesmerizing. Even clothed those massive things still command attention.

As a Canadian, I have a little experience with this. I mean, ask an American what they know about Canada and you'll hear snow, moose, igloos, and we do not say "a boot" instead of "about" although they will insist we do! Rick Mercer made fun of this in a tv special called "Rick Mercer: Talking to Americans". If you know Canada, it's hysterical and painful at the same time. We kind of expect it from the US people now.

I follow news too closely for my health. Thanks to the current president's trade policies and the Hong Kong protests, I know a FEW things about RECENT Chinese events. I even remember exactly who Xi Jinping is and why his government dislikes Winnie the Pooh.

I know a lengthy good amount of knowledge about China and I do keep myself updated now and then, but news only is something I care about on certain things. But your friend does have a point regardless.
