Lindisfarne, we hardly knew ye. Given the time period and oral tradition, the nordic historical accounts of characters and events are intermingled with mythology. That goes for both Ragnar and Lagertha who's a legendary shield maiden. That's why he told Björn the story of having to fight a bear and massive dog to win her hand in the first episode. Free women had a lot of protections as a husband wasn't even allowed to hit his wife (shocking) but slaves had no personal rights. Rollo would only be in trouble if that was someone else's slave he abused without permission. As for the smell, Vikings were actually very clean and well-groomed. Christians were the ones who were afraid to wash. The whole snorting bowl thing comes from a single historical record of a muslim traveller who wrote about vikings in central russia. Although there's a really good movie made about it called the 13th Warrior, with Antonio Banderas and the guy who plays the big blonde guy on the boat (who's also Ulfric Stormcloak's VA).

I think Ragnar Lothbrok is "just a legend", but there are some characters, who certainly did some great deeds. No spoilers!

Badass Reaction Sir! Another banger for this show. Yeah , I'm down for it! Can't wait till next episode. Oh, and a worse "Pass around bowl" in a movie/TV would be Peter Jackson 1st Film , Bad Taste. I may be the only one on here that get's that. Lol Also , try Centurion - 2010 - Neil Marshall - The movie is based on the real mystery of the Ninth Legion, a Roman legion that disappeared from the northern parts of Britain around AD 117. Another one I rarely meet someone that has seen it sadly. Thanks again Sir. : ] Peace

I would say that the reason they just killed them all so brutally is that in their culture (the Vikings) a man is supposed to die a good death by fighting or at least with honor to get into Valhalla or the afterlife. They couldn't understand their language so all they perceived is weakness as the monks ran, flailed and welped as they're not men of war. None fought back. Interesting to think about from both perspectives because for the monks the "son of men" had finally arrived to wreak havoc upon them as was foretold so they were frightened to death before anything ever started.
