When Sandra Huller sings and shows that glimpse of vulnerability, the movie goes from great to epic for me. The scene was filmed in an officer’s lounge on a real aircraft carrier, and she was working in another film at the time and agreed to fly in just for that scene. The transition from the aquarium in the lounge with its little diver, to Grace’s spacewalk, is brilliant.

“The Martian” was written by the same author of the book “Project Hail Mary.” During Covid, actor Ryan Gosling read the book and decided to produce it as a film. It hasn’t yet been nominated for awards because it came out nearly a year before awards season, but it’s a wildly popular film that premiered in IMAX and filled theaters. Rocky is voiced by the head puppeteer, so essentially a puppet handler became an actor when they could’ve find an other voice they like.

In the book, Rocky’s people spend months making that habitat for Grace, and they also have to create food for him. There was a vegetable garden on the Hail Mary, so they can easily enough grow more veggies, but the only protein source on the planet is Grace himself. They wind up cloning some of his muscle tissue to make what Grace calls “Me-Butgers.”

It's not really mentioned in the movie, but in the book they establish a conversion system between their respective time systems.

What a film! So nice to get a original, beautiful and genuinely touching sci fi story in 2026!!

As mentioned, this came out recently so it's too early for awards. But they are indeed working on a sequel either currently or will be in the near future. I'm definitely interested to see where the story will evolve from here.

It's okay. Way too light hearted and jovial. The lead actors tone doesn't fit the serious nature of the subject as well as the principal cast for the most part. Would have improved significantly with a different actor and cut out the marvel-esque humor that is eyeroll inducing after awhile. Feel like they make this type of quasi dramatic/comedic/adventure space drama every couple of years or so. Fast forwarded through a lot of scenes of the lead actor just staring for extended periods.

In Project Hail Mary, the varying aspect ratios were used as a visual storytelling tool. Scenes on Earth were filmed in 2.39:1 widescreen, creating a compressed, enclosed, and high-pressure feeling. In contrast, scenes in space expanded into the towering 1.43:1 IMAX format, designed to make audiences feel the vastness and overwhelming scale of the universe.Directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, along with cinematographer Greig Fraser, designed roughly 75% of the film (the entirety of the space sequences) in the expansive, near-square 1.43:1 aspect ratio. This deliberate choice was to make the audience feel absorbed, and at times overwhelmed, by outer space, while keeping Earth-bound moments feeling constrained and grounded. To achieve this soaring vertical height without relying on incredibly loud, traditional 15/70mm IMAX film cameras, Greig Fraser utilized an Arri Alexa 65 camera equipped with rotated vertical anamorphic lenses. This allowed them to capture a massive amount of visual information that fills the screen in IMAX theaters.

Even though you thought there was too much humor, I noticed plenty of times you had a pretty big smile on your face and one time your eyes almost betrayed you with some water loss. Almost. lol.

That was from Google. I have no idea if any of it is true. lol.

I wonder what happened to every other solar system that didn’t get the cure?

My only criticism with the movie is that they let out a lot of the science that is in the book.

Most Science Fiction movies or shows have one "bad science" flaw that take away from the realism. In the movie Gravity they use jetpacks to travel between ISS and Hubble Telescope, which is impossible. The crew in Alien all smoked cigs on the ship... in this one its when Ryan Gosling takes off his hat or beanie and his hair is perfect.

A character detail that I didn’t notice until a reviewer pointed it out: in Sandra Huller’s final scene (where she’s an old woman) she has a tattoo on her neck that symbolizes a life sentence without parole. Wow. This is the life her character has chosen for herself, out of desperate necessity. Devoting her life to a task that people hate her for when things go badly (as they often do in the book) and that isn’t likely to work. She condemns herself to that life.

My biggest complaint is that while the ending is the same in the book, the film didn't really explain the stakes. When Grace realises that Rocky is stranded out there in the dead of space, he knows that he only has enough fuel to either go home or take Rocky to his home planet. They convey that here, but what they don't convey is that Grace only has enough food for about four years, it will take about four years to get to Rocky's planet and even when he gets there, there is no food he can eat. All of Rocky's planets plants and animals are poisonous to him. Earlier he tried to make Rocky's rations edible to him and failed, everything was full of heavy metals. But if Grace doesn't take Rocky home, not only will Rocky die but his whole planet. So he makes the decision to send the probes back to earth, as was the original mission plan, and then sacrifice himself to save Rocky and his planet. It's the exact same dilemma from when he was kidnapped but this time he makes the decision consensually. It's the climax to his whole character arc. The only reason he survives is that Rocky comes up with the idea of having Grace eat the Taumoeba, which Rocky has literally tonnes of now that all his fuel has been converted to Taumoeba. (Grace can't eat asterophage as it's too hot.) But Grace only hears that plan AFTER spending a few months looking for Rocky, so for that whole time he was genuinely planning to sacrificing himself for Rocky and his people. The remaining food on the ship keeps grace alive for the journey, the the Taumoeba keeps him alive llong enough (barely) for Rocky's people to develop a way to clone his own body to make protein he can eat.
