My first job out of college in 2005 was selling 3yr and 5yr ARMs to people with zero business buying a home. I'd tell them they can always refinance when the time comes. All I had to do was ask if they thought they'd be making more money in 5 years than they do today, then call my mortgage buddy and get them approved for more than they were expecting. It was such an evil job. I knew it was wrong at the time but was making so much money I didn't care. Then it all collapsed overnight.

Sometimes seemingly great ideas have horrible consequences, like government back student loans. Sounds great but college would be a fraction of the current cost if the government hadn't guaranteed paying on those loans for the last 4 decades. In this case, the housing bill passed by the Democrats sounded great but the simple fact is a home isn't a right. Forcing banks to give garbage loans, what did they think would happen? Banks weren't going to eat the bad loans. They just came up with a way to pass the buck. I still say the folks who really should have gone to jail were the ratings agencies that put AAA on garbage.

Great reaction. I knew you'd love this. Now its time to dive into the Opioid Epidemic. There are a couple miniseries worth a watch: "Dopesick" and "Painkiller" are probably the best ones that I've seen. They made a few I haven't watched yet.

Please do this 🙏! Also please do Dexter: New Blood and Dexter:Resurrection after season 8. Both seasons are great but Resurrection is a top 3 season of Dexter and the series isn’t complete without watching those. I’ve seen good reactors that did the rest of Dexter but didn’t watch those and it’s tragic to just not finish the story. I hope you aren’t one of them…

This is a pretty dumb take. The worst loans came from non bank lenders like Countrywide and New Century, which weren't covered by the CRA, and CRA eligible loans actually performed better than subprime overall. Housing bubbles also hit Spain, Ireland, and the UK, none of which had anything like the CRA. And banks weren't stuck holding the bad loans, they sold them off in securities. States cut per student funding after 2008 and colleges made up the gap. Plenty of countries fund college publicly and pay far less per student. The government backs student loans in Canada and college is way cheaper here. Government involvement isn't the problem. How it's designed is.

Sure Jan. Your take is the dumb one. Without federal backing, college tuition simply would not have increased at a rate not only outpacing inflation but DWARFING inflation over the last 40 years. My college was 10k per year. It is now 50k. That would not have happened without federally guaranteed loans. Your take is wrong.
