The blanket: The swastika is an ancient symbol, thousands of years older than Nazism. Its meaning varies somewhat by culture, but it is generally associated with good fortune, prosperity, well-being, eternity, and auspiciousness. Hinduism: शुभ (shubh) — auspiciousness, prosperity, good fortune, and blessings. It is commonly used during weddings, festivals, housewarmings and religious ceremonies. Buddhism: It can represent the Buddha's teachings, eternity, good fortune, or the endless cycle of existence. It is particularly common in East Asian Buddhist traditions. Jainism: The swastika is an important religious symbol representing the four states of existence and is associated with spiritual development. China: Traditionally associated with good fortune, longevity and abundance. The symbol 卍/卐 can also represent the Buddhist concept of eternity. Japan: The Buddhist 卍 (manji) is commonly used to mark Buddhist temples on maps. It does not mean Nazism. Tibet: It has long-standing associations with good fortune, protection and cosmic order, including traditions predating or independent of Buddhism. ☸️ Why does it look like the Nazi symbol? The Nazi Party adopted a rotated version of the swastika (卐) in 1920 and turned it into a political symbol of Nazi Germany. The Nazis gave it a completely different ideological meaning connected to their racial ideology.
