all that character development for what? this was such a stupid and pointless death it still pisses me off to this day

Duncan Cofell

To be fair, a big issue with Naruto is the LACK of character development. They gave us a good amount in OG Naruto, but for those of us who grew up watching the series, none of us sadly really cared much about Neji's death because he was hardly an impactful character after over a decade lol.

Naruto Uzumaki

Tbh i always say Kishimoto was off his meds to kill Neji when Hiashi (hinata's dad) was right there. He could've died protecting Neji, Hinata, and Naruto. It makes SO MUCH sense consdering he comes from the main house which was a huge plot point for the Hyuga clan and his brother died for him. It also would've broken the cycle of hate and tension between the main house and branch. Kishimoto was really off not seeing that. Neji also would've had even more character development from this.

Naruto Uzumaki

Yea kishimoto was dumb asl, killing Neji off when Hashi was right there was wild lmao

I think the reason this was necessary is because Naruto hasnt lost anyone close in front of his eyes before.(with Jiraiya he had time to process)Naruto has never experienced war. Thats why his line of "ill wont let anyone die" is a naive thing to say during a war. Obito is simply pointing that out. Like Sisi said, withiut Hinata , Naruto mightve given up here. Shikamaru handling his father death better is also on purpose. He isnt as naive as Naruto. Lastly you guys said ofc naruto was going to pick himself up, without acknowledging that the 2 last times narutk thought a comrade died in front of him was with Haku "killing"sasuke and Pain "killing" hinata. He completely lost it both times and gave into hatred. In fact the whole point of Nagato believing in Naruto was on the condition that when naruto has to go through to war and lose people like this. That he wont give up and give in to hatred like Obito. This is exactly the kind of moment that was being foreshadowed since the end of the pain arc. Dont get me wrong, the execution wasnt perfect, it coulve'been way better and a lot of people hated it. I just think to call this episode pointless and saying nothing changed for naruto as a character is just incorrect.

Jabets Luis

Bc no onr at all would care if Hiashi died. Obito taunting Naruto over hiashi death wouldve looked stupid. I actually think even Neji's death was too soft of a moment bc he hasnt been relevant for a long time. Which is a problem that couldve been fixed it Neji was given more relevancy even for a 2-3 episodes leading up to this. Just like jiraija and asuma got their moments before their death. Neji died literally as an after thought. No forewshadowing. No moment with Lee and Gai. No moment of him with Hinata or even Naruto before hand.

MariaP

My thoughts exactly, it is a bit strange to call this episode pointless, because it is a big moment for Naruto as a character. Furthermore, I even do not think that it was executed that terribly, although not ideal of course: it showed that anybody can die in a war in any second and Neji in the end made a similar choice as his father: to protect his family (Hinata) and comrades. And although it is extremely said, it is a bonding moment for Naruto and Hinata, it showed again that Hinata can be a very powerful support for Naruto.

You have a valid point on a couple of things but I wouldn't concede that Naruto hasn't already showed maturity when he's been presented with Death in front of his eyes. When he was reverse summoned in the Leaf village during Pain's attack he saw his entire village (all the people, houses, infrastructure) laid to waste.. like literally nothing existing there. Again because they're searching for him. It's the same thing imo and he managed to remain calm and not give into hatred. I agree that it makes sense to test Naruto's resolve during the war but as you said the execution is horrible. We've already seen this structure before. It's the same thing like when his dad showed up to help him fight off hatred. Only this time, there is no hatred to give into and it looked more like he was about to give up instead of tapping into a dark side like the nine tails. Shikamaru staying strong makes sense as you say, but what about Ino who stays just as strong as Shikamaru in that moment. This makes it look like she has a stronger resolve than Naruto. Like.. it's all fine the idea of what the author was going for but the execution is so bad.. it's like everything he was trying to portray got lost because of how bad it was done.

Mski & Sisi

It's actually crazy when I recall that during the Pain arc he is literally in sage mode able to feel everybody's chakra. Disrupted chakra of countless of his people he's able to feel them dying and is strong enough to remain calm and be badass in that moment and go after Pain.. but here Neji is enough to disrupt him from his resolve..

Jabets Luis

Hey fairpoint. He did deal with Kakashi death incredibly well in the pain arc. And u are right about Ino. I concede to that. I actually changed my mind a bit reading your comment. I think the author ran into 2 problems here. He hasnt developped side characters enough for their death to feel impactful after og Naruto and like u said Naruto has dealt with death before better. The only way to challenge Naruto ideology wouldve been to kill character after character before his eyes. To feel true despair, to show what war is. Its not some people dying here and there, its people dying all the time. Losing everyone. But thats not in the dna of the Naruto show as a whole(killing off many characters I mean). So the author got stuck doing something half assed. That jusy feels empty and very random.

Mski & Sisi

Yeah.. I was also too harsh saying the episode was pointless. I gotta do a better job of doing the analysis and not be emotional about it. It's just hard sometimes after you've just seen it. No episode is truly pointless.

MariaP

I agree with both of you, that the execution was quite poor. Just a small point, I do not think that if a character or even a person in real life dealt with death "maturely" once, that it will be like that all the time, the circumstances are different and every time is not easy to overcome. Plus, Obito emphasized that it will continue and that Naruto will lose everybody one by one. I could assume that it is part of the reason why he reacted so strongly, not being sure that he will be able to protect everyone.

Mski & Sisi

Well yeah, you're right. That's what the author was going for. But still, Neji is just a weird character to pick for this narrative. It's weird seeing Naruto deal so well with the loss of the entire village, his sensei, Tsunade back in the Pain Arc and here for Neji he's so vastly different. If anything he should be better equipped to handle his emotions here since he's dealt with this before. Neji doesn't warrant a worse reaction from Naruto than what he had during the Pain Arc. All of these things that the author was trying to do would've worked really well if it was.. le't say.. Iruka Sensei. But Neji is a weird choice... With Iruka Sensei you wouldn't even have to explain why he couldn't protect himself from this Ten Tails Attack since Iruka isn't the strongest character.

MariaP

Yeah, it would definitely be more impactful if we saw more involvement of Neji in the story and more interactions between Neji and Naruto in Shippuden. But here the author relied completely on the connection to Neji that the viewers had from OG Naruto and for many people understandably it was not sufficient.

Damian Wysoczański

Always felt like Kishi and Jump editors decided it's time to kill off someone important to make up for lack of consequences throughout the war up until this point. Terrible execution to say at least.

Alec Raatz

I didn’t think it was bad execution. It made obitos speech that much more real. Naruto didn’t see Jaraiya or Kakashi die in front of him, he had to hear about it. It’s different. I have more of an issue with the character more than execution. In my opinion he should’ve died during the Sasuke retrieval arc anyway. I feel as though they could’ve killed off anyone here and you would’ve found a way to complain about it.

Mski & Sisi

Yes, he saw his entire village destroyed to ashes and was still badass enough and fighting Pain. It's okay to admit your favorite show had a bad writing moment. You don't have to attack us.

Rinne

ngl being a reaction channel might be harder than it seems. I don’t think I could take all these insufferable children’s opinions. Why are we comparing a character that spoke to Naruto like 3 times in 500 episodes to Kakashi and Jiraya? Other than being his age and having an interaction with Naruto when they were twelve, how is Neji different than the couple thousand ninjas that are dying around at this point? Why pretend that this abrupt nonsense of a reaction Naruto has is anything but a cheap shot by the author to make it seem like there are stakes in this arc???

Alec Raatz

Not attacking yall, and this is far from my favorite show. Just feel like your critique doesn’t make much sense. Seeing it happen first hand in front of you is different. That’s why he went berserk when he thought he Hinata died.

Mski & Sisi

You can have your opinion that's completely fine. But your last sentence sounds so bitter and attacking.. questioning our integrity as if we're hating on the show on purpose... Like the least you could do is read some of the other comments under the video and notice that we're not the only ones feeling like that. Are all of us gonna complain at that scene regardless of how they did it?

Alec Raatz

Sorry mate, don’t mean to come off that way. All I’m saying I personally didn’t have an issue with it. It definitely could have been handled better, but I didn’t see an issue with the death.

dWr

Thx man, thought i was alone with that opinion 😅

Vasil Mihaylov

See funny thing is, this pales in comparison to the absolute BS Kishimoto pulled out of his ass to pepsi another character later on ...

Mski & Sisi

We missed adding it to the playlist. Just fixed it. It should be all good now.
