this was one of those album drops that, for those who were there, they'll never forget where they were or what they were doing when it dropped. it was a total monoculture moment. i remember racing home from the cinema, buying it on itunes and staying up all night listening to it. i think this album had a similar effect on pop music that 808s had on rap, it catapulted alt-pop into the mainstream. i'm so happy you got to it <3 my other favorite from her is 4, which is a very overlooked record imho

Just finished watching and so happy you guys loved it!! I agree with everyone that the you would enjoy the visuals for this album. If you decide to continue with Bey, B’Day is a MUST. It’s her sophomore album, just banger after banger and notoriously loud as hell 😛🤪 Beyhive thinks Act 3 will be heavily influenced by rock, and I feel she will bring back a lot of her B’Day songs for the Act 3 tour. She’s a must see in concert too!!! Ahhhh just so excited 🥳

This album is the reason I'm a Beyonce fan! I still think about her 15-minute performance at the 2014 VMAs which introduced me to this album. I feel like I had never paid much attention to her albums/music before this record because, like you guys, I always categorized her as a big pop artist that isn't really making music that would interest me. But this record is something else, really showed me her artistry and capability of making a perfect, well-rounded album, not just singles. I have not stopped listening to her new albums since then! I have also listened to her albums before self-titled, and personally, I don't think they are at the same level as her albums since self-titled. Still amazing and worth listening to, but they definitively fall under a more nostalgic Beyonce sound (in my opinion). I think instead of going back to older Beyonce music, you should 100% listen to Solange's albums (Beyonce's sister!). A Seat at the Table and When I Get Home are two incredibly special records that I am sure you will enjoy!!! (PS listening to both Yeezus and self-titled all of 2013/2014 non-stop was so much fun at 16)

I wholeheartedly agree with everything except I’d really like them to do 4 too. It’s such a beautiful, timeless album and also I feel that this was the start of her transition from the first three very much radio friendly pop albums to more experimental, independent pop music. 4 was like a palette cleanser, just oldschool, beautiful love songs. It wasn’t the music that the public expected from her at that point. It wasn’t daring or innovative like later albums either but I feel like it was an homage to the music that inspired her growing up and it was her being very true to herself ♥️ It’s just such a happy, feel good, emotional album.

omg YESSSSSsssSSs!! thank you both for giving some love to her previous albums, you will be rewarded. let me echo other sentiments in this comment section when i say that the most rewarding part of discovering beyonce's discography is being able to enjoy homecoming (the documentary behind her HISTORIC !!!!! coachella set, a headliner performance that set a nearly unattainable bar for those who would follow her). the way that she weaves her songs and other samples together in a new way, working with a drumline, backup dancers, and a full marching band is required viewing. required!!

At this point you listened to Beyoncè's last four album, you should continue going backwards and listen to "4" which is her fourth album. That's the era in which she starts to experiment after her first three album in which she sedimented herself as a huge popstar with mega hit singles for the radio. From 4 on she starts ascending to a league of her own.

I think with the Frank feature on Superpower, he was more there for backing vocals but Bey wanted him to get credit anyway. It's funny because with Bey doing vocals on Pink + White (and Coldplay's Hymn for the Weekend) she probably refused being credited as a feature, but then will make sure Frank gets credit for the same kind of thing. A lot of reactors go into that song expecting to hear more from Frank.

i think the surprise release bit is important to know because it actually changed the standard release schedule for new music! People debate her being the first artist to surprise drop an album, of course. But, hers was one of the most notable and she shifted the general music model to be album drops with no promo and to drop new releases on Fridays instead of Tuesdays!
