The similarities and the differences between these two characters and L are really fascinating elements to the show. I enjoy watching Light scheme even though I am not on his side. Yet you easily see traits of L within them both. Mello with the sweets, Near with the unusual sitting position. Mello consorts with criminals and is willing to use them, and extreme methods (like kidnapping Saiyu) to achieve his means. Which is something L also did, using the thief and the spy, or getting Light's father to pretend to shoot him (which was illegal, as was Light's confinement) so L wasn't above using unscrupulous or illegal methods. Near is different, he doesn't possess that same chaotic element that is in L and Mello, so although Near is superior in intellect, Mello's got a chaotic edge to him, so the only way to determine who is superior between them is by catching Kira, the one guy L couldn't bring down.

The sad part is that Light was probably going to kill his sister. The only reason he didn't was because he couldn't blame the death on Kira since only they knew about her kidnapping. The rest of the show is so good can't wait to see more!
