The actor who plays Captain Jack is actually the leader in the torchwood series.

There’s a mini episode set as a prequel to this one where the new doctor and rose discuss Captain Jack and also shows the Doctor starting to break down like he does in the beginning of this one. It’s called “Born Again.” Be on the lookout. There’s going to be at least one or two per season.

Also, Torchwood starts after the end of this season. There are actually a few major spoilers for this season of Doctor Who in the first season of Torchwood.

When a doctor regenerates, he retains the memories of his former regeneration's and is essentially the same core person, however the personality, character traits and face of the doctor always change. Due to this, each doctor can be very different from the previous one, so it's really a gamble on what you're going get with the Doctor (at least trait, attitude and personality wise) following a regeneration. 10's season's have a lot of overlap with 9 in some ways. Still, 9's personality along with what made 9 uniquely him, and all the essential components that made up the 9th Doctor as a whole, that is gone now, having been overwritten in order to make and become the 10th Doctor. For 10, 9 is a bunch of memories from his most recent self but that's all. He keeps the memories of 9, along with those from being Doctor's 1-8, but 10 is still a unique personality and version of the doctor all his own, he isn't just 9 again (or any previous doctor following a regeneration) with a new face. Hopefully this explained the regeneration process of the doctor a little bit better.
