I think Zaheer is already a trained martial artist, but he just uses the bending to augment his skills that are already there

guys think about why a dude without bending needs to be held in a pirson in the middle of nowhere with high security, sending that many guards to see him, having him going against the wall to feed him, etc. He clearly was a bad ass even without powers. So his fighting skills have always been serious, he's using air bending to henhance his abilities

ps: you are thinking of a different guru

My thinking on Zaheer: in real life, the bending martial arts are based on non-bending arts. Like for example, airbending is based on Ba Gua. So maybe in the Avatar world, there are martial arts for non-benders that use the same motions as bending, and Zaheer learned the Avatar-world equivalent of Ba Gua? So when he suddenly got airbending power, he already knew all the moves and had spent years practicing them.

he's so good cause zaheer is just that badass. spiritually enlightened, martial artist master and scholar of the air nomads. easy peasy, simple pimple

I think you're confusing Guru Laghima with Guru Pathik, the guru who helped Aang. Zaheer even says Guru Laghima lived 4000 years ago, long before most of the Avatars we're familiar with were born. As for how Zqheer is so good, well as I think you know the bending styles are based on martial arts so it makes sense that someone who is already trained in fighting would pick it up very easily. Also consider the fact that Zaheer, a man that had no bending before this, was locked up in a remote prison under heavy guard. He's clearly an extremely dangerous person.

I remember being surprised at how quickly Zaheer picked up bending but we also don't know how long he had the power for. 2 weeks max since Harmonic convergence so let's say he has had the power for at least 2-3 days. He was stuck in a prison with nothing else to do and may have already been trained in martial arts. All he needed was to learn how to create enough force against the white lotus, plus he had the element of surprise because they obviously weren't expecting him to use air bending against them. Anyway, Book 3 is my favorite out of all ATLA and LOK seasons.

I believe Zaheer was a non-bender who knew martial arts, he is also sealed away in a remote prison without any contact with people apart from the White Lotus guards so that should also tell you that he was already incredibly dangerous without the ability to bend, and he's had weeks left alone without any contact for him to at least experiment with his new air bending ability, and he also had the element of surprise because they had no reason whatsoever to ever think he could use bending on them, so all of that is why he won right there.
