Garnet is kind of special, shes a incredibly stable fusion because of how in-sync Ruby and sapphire are.

Long comment, lol, sorry. I have been waiting a LONG time for you two to get here. I didn't start watching until right after this episode aired (I started from the beginning, that's just when I started), but a friend told me that the whole first season fans were speculating about Garnet being a fusion. There were a LOT of clues: she has two gems, she plays the keytar (a fusion instrument), when Pearl says fusing is hard she says "Not for me," etc. The big mystery was WHY she's always fused. Why would two gems NEVER separate? Did they stay fused too long and now they're trapped? Was one gem cracked and the fusion was the only way to keep it alive? Was one gem evil and the other one keeping it under control? Lots of theories... but the one pretty much nobody saw coming was "because they're in love." And when it happened, the Internet EXPLODED. Gay characters were still SUPER rare in cartoons, and they NEVER showed gay *relationships*. People *freaked* (mostly in a good way), it was just like this explosion of joy so huge it spilled out of the fandom and brought in a ton of new people. (Like me! I wasn't spoiled, just I heard the show was really, really gay in the best possible way.) Also "Stronger Than You" (Garnet's song) is considered by many people to be one of the best, maybe THE best, song in the series. I think there's *maybe* two or three in the whole show that are better, but it's still one of the best.
