I know what you mean about Edward’s reaction after Bella and Jacob kiss and how Edward is so understanding. That moment is expanded upon in the books and the extended version of this movie. In the extended cut, Edward says something to the effect that when he left he left Bella broken and Jacob was there for her and it left its mark on both of them. I really wish they had kept the entire scene in. It helps the audience understand Edward’s POV and it really illustrates how understanding he is.

So a little more background about Leah Clearwater and the whole triangle thing. Leah and Emily are cousins . Sam and Leah were together even in high school, Sam imprinted on Emily when he was still new to the whole wolf thing. But didn’t tell Leah about what’s been going on between him and Emily until out of nowhere he dumps Leah but just didn’t tell the reason. She found that out herself. Even though they are a pack. Leah doesn’t want to be under Sam as she can see his every thoughts which just hurts her so much. Also females can’t be wolfs, so Leah Clearwater is the first female to be one. I wish Leah had more scenes and such. Her and Rose are so underrated.

The conversation between Edward and Jacob in the tent, Bella did hear it, but she thought that maybe it was a dream or something because she was mostly asleep and the book is from Bella's perspective. Now, with that said, it's not really depicted in the movie, or not as clear, but the conversation is not only kind of them understanding each other, some camaraderie, but also it notes that they are competing each other for Bella. I won't necessarily like a competition per se, but it's very much "May the best man win". And who makes the first strike? Edward. He purposely mentions the engagement because he knew Jacob was nearby and would be able to hear, despite knowing that Bella didn't want him to know. Jacob, inadvertently (I say inadvertently because it's Bella that makes the call) delivers the second strike with kissing Bella. So when Bella visits Jacob when he's recovering and he asks her about Edward knowing about the kiss, and Bella tell him that he wasn't even mad at either of them, Jacob responds "Damn, he's better than I thought." Bella says that Edward isn't playing a game, which she may be right, but there is definitely competition, hence why Edward spilled the beans about the engagement in the first place and Jacob telling Bella that Edward's not as perfect as she thinks.
