Just my quick take on this. You do not owe this guy anything. You certainly never have to explain yourself if you don’t invite someone over or if something doesn’t feel exactly as you want it to. It seems like you showed interest and your intentions. If he backed off because you were honest to yourself—sorry guy—too bad, so sad. I say you are better off without him.
