Hey Folks!

A few weeks ago I released a video detailing Ruffwear's release of service dog gear to owner trainers. Frankly, I was surprised by some of the comments on my video, but mostly the myriad of negative comments on Ruffwear's post.

This video is a response to that.

More training stuff next week, but I felt like I needed to talk about this.

If you have feedback, be sure to comment directly on the YouTube video instead of Patreon for all my public-facing videos :)

Unfortunately, the “policy” update only applies to US customers. :( As a Canadian, I am unable to access the service dog gear despite there being no unifying federal access laws for service dogs in Canada and no mandatory requirements in any province to hold a certification for an owner-trained dog. While it is a step in the right direction that Ruffwear is taking some responsibility for creating barriers to the disabled community, unfortunately they are still acting as gate keepers outside the USA, which is frustratingly hypocritical.

Hi Bridget, While I hear your frustration and hope that this changes in the future, I think this is partly a distribution issue and they're trying to roll out to the US market where their business is located, before making it available outside the country. I know that the issue (directly from a ruffwear representative) with selling the Unifly harness is also logistical. They are trying to figure out the best way to package and provide instructions for the harness, as they are currently packaged essentially for wholesale.

Beautifully said, Laura. We are a community first, and we have to care about and fight for equity. Thank you!

Because of your video we looked into Ruff. The magnetic clips are complete game changer the rheumatoid arthritis. My husband and I have makes the other clips incredibly difficult, but these magnetic clips are amazing. The quality of the harness is great and her puppy dog likes it. Liked their items so much were buying two different leads and another harness. That’s just a straight Summer harness since we have a black dog. I don’t know why some people have to be hateful. They can bring out facts, but there’s no reason to be ugly about it.

Hey Laura, enlightening video, thank you! Incidentally I just met a blind woman and her trainer daughter at a mini horse show in CO. They are training one of their miniature horses for guide work. The horse has been out in a service-in-training vest for some time, and seems to have what it takes for this kind of work. I asked if they have a mentor; they do not. I told them about you—you are a horse woman, a highly experienced certified guide dog trainer and now a trainer of people who are training their own service animal. They were very interested and may contact you sometime, once they’ve checked out your channel. Judy is the mom, who has been losing her sight for 9 years. The trainer-daughter is Kelly. They’re from Limon, CO. I trust this was ok, and that you’ll let them know if you can help in some way. Thanks.

Aw thanks so much Catherine! I really appreciate the positive reinforcement. Glad to have you here!
