Hey Ya'll!

Short one today!

I talk about a puppy who demand barks in line at stores, and what to do about it, spay recovery length and ideas for things to do while your pup is recovering, as well as a little case study on my own dogs and management. Finally, I give you a little bit of insight on my puppy situation.

Thanks so much for your help today. When I take her to stores it’s like Home Depot to do loose leash, and then settle time as we sit in the outdoor furniture section as we build up her time settling each trip. I do stores that are only pet friendly for now. Will take time off training as she just passed AKC community canine and will start Urban in October when streets aren’t that hot. Again thank you.

Yes, and when I'm talking about this stuff, know that I'm talking generally so that others can benefit, and not necessarily saying that 'you' are taking her for long shopping trips. But if you can give her some time off, then practice more settling at home, and then set up some scenarios where you can talk to a person out and about and practice, the doing nothing piece, I think you'll find that the issue is resolved. Congrats on your CGCA!

Totally understand, will follow your above advice as we don’t do much settling at home.

Can I ask a follow up to the waiting in adolescence…does this work for reactivity as well? I’ve got a 10 month old lab and I’m constantly struggling between how much to let him rest and mature vs. how much to keep him exposed to things (we live in the woods so he doesn’t get exposure to other people/dogs) at home. Thanks!

Wow Whip, what a stinker! That's amazing the behavior stopped by just preventing it for one week. Sending all the estrus thoughts for puppy!!

So if you have a dog that doesn't get a lot of exposure, and they're not already showing signs of reactivity, I would make it a goal to get them out and experiencing things a few times a week. If they are showing signs of reactivity, it's a bit harder to prescribe over the internet, but in general, I'd be getting really good at the engage/disengage game at home, and then take it out for short, purposeful sessions away from home, along with settling practice in locations that are likely to have few triggers. (this is all assuming they aren't in a fear period). So, a little tricky to say online, but you definitely don't want to wait till their an adult to work on consistent exposure to novel stimuli. You'll also want to play shaping games with novel stimuli at home. Hope that helps!

Just wanted to share something that’s been helpful to me regarding service dog training skills: About 5 years ago I started fostering dogs for a couple different local rescues. I was getting training experiences with a multitude of different dogs with different temperaments and different ages and breeds and histories and getting to train so many has been an invaluable part of my learning. And at the same time, I’m helping dogs find forever homes.
