Hey Folks!

It's here! I've been working on revamping this guide for the last few months and it's finally done! I've edited and expanded the instructional content, made it more user friendly, and provided links to relevant videos and products to take your knowledge a bit further!

This Puppy "Quick Start" guide is meant to be an overview, touching on many of the puppy training basics that you need to know to get started with your new puppy!

This guide will cover:

  • Training Method

  • Management

  • Crate Training and Confinement

  • Potty Training

  • Communication

  • Exercise

  • Rest

  • Food & Stuffable Toys

It will also give you a sample schedule for your new puppy that you can use and modify to make sure all your puppy's needs are met.

Where relevant, you'll also see direct links to videos that help further explain certain topics included in the guide.

Finally, the end includes a list of my favorite products that I use with young puppies in a visual product guide by category.

If you're brand new to puppy training, or you're looking for a bit of a refresher after some time away from puppy raising, this guide will help put you and your new pup on the path to success.

Happy Training!

I’ve been watching all your puppy videos for my 17 weeks old. Can’t wait to do a deep dive into this guide. Thank you!

DOGGY•U

Yay! This is meant to be a compliment to the videos so hopefully you'll find it to be a nice overview :)

Eve

Wow this is amazing, its thorough and simple at the same time!

DOGGY•U

Thanks Eve <3 I worked hard on this one to make it user friendly and not overwhelming, while touching on the main points. Glad it hit the mark!

Lindsay

Thank you for posting this! I just got a new puppy. Not a service dog, but a hobby of mine is training and I'd love to learn via this dog (and you!) You never know, it may be a helpful skill to be able to self train a service dog someday. 🙂

DOGGY•U

My other dog Jake is not a service dog, but having skills like being able to retrieve and close doors was super helpful when I blew my ACL several years ago when Whip was still a pup. Task training and trick training are very similar and can be super helpful (and fun) for pet dogs as well! Happy Training!

Thank you so much for this. We get to start his classes in July. So very excited. We have been working hard. So very proud of not just our star Cowboy but also my husband and I.

Wei Li

Thank you so much for the topic! Could you also talk about two dogs at the same household? I am a new member, but could not find how to ask questions as you mentioned for the members benefit.

DOGGY•U

Hi Wei! All the information about submitting a question for the monthly Q&A can be found in your welcome note (under the members tab). Please check out the section on question submission. (I am however working on a video/resource for the future to make it easier for everyone to understand how to navigate Patreon and my page specifically, as I know it can be confusing). I should post the call for questions in the next two weeks. Please post your question when that specific post comes up (that's where I take that month's questions from) and I'll be sure to answer it on the the live! :)

I am worried I did too much socializing with my pup. He is 4 months old now. Loves going everywhere which I am super proud about. He is not a typical SD breed. I showed his Mom. He is a Pyrenean Shepherd. Typically they are very wary of strangers sometimes to the point of being afraid. I didn’t want that. I wanted him comfortable everywhere. His Mom is very sweet and friendly. He got her not typical attitude. He is very confident. I am thinking I need to pivot to focusing on me more when are out, and keep people from petting him? Did I screw up? Will he still be a good SD when he is older?

DOGGY•U

Hey Killeen - It's great that your pup is not scared of people! When we talk about socialization, it's important to remember that socialization does not = needing to meet every person and dog that we see, and in fact, observing people and dogs is often a better option in most cases, as they won' t be able to meet and greet people or dogs when doing service work. At 4 months, I would now focus on more passive observation and training around people and dogs. You might also want to check out my Deep Dive on neutrality: https://www.patreon.com/posts/deep-dive-replay-83534153 But no, it is unlikely you "screwed up". But it may take some work for him to understand that he won't be greeting people any longer. I would also focus on putting any greeting he does do on cue, but limit that to occasional greetings.

I knew he wasn’t the best choice but it’s my breed. I do reward for not reacting/ barking to sounds or anything else. One night we sat on my patio because he was reacting to neighbors. I just used it as a distraction and he calmed and engaged with me. I rent an apartment. What are LGB’s? Sorry I suck at acronyms. lol

DOGGY•U

That should have been LGD (livestock guarding dog) not LGB which in my head was livestock guarding breeds lol

Killeen Ryan

He is actually the herding dog that works with the Great Pyrenees and that’s why they also alert. When the GP is sleeping with the flock the Pyrenean Shepherd alerts to possible danger while keeping the flock together. They are independent herders in the Pyrenees mountains of France. Medium size dog. Very intelligent and love work.

This is awesome! It makes DoggyU an even more valuable resource, having an easy way to search and find puppy-specific material again—something I was doing furiously as my nephew’s pup was rapidly passing critical socialization, enviro-indifference, “learning to learn” and habituation-to-husbandry phases. Hope to use it someday with a pup of my own! Hats off & congrats, Laura, for prioritizing & completing this goal. And a million thanks to your helper too. Looking forward to all the great content to come as you raise your next service dog!

DOGGY•U

Thank you so much Wendy for this comment! It made my day! <3 I hope that many will find this guide as a good jumping off part as they start their puppy raising journey!

And one question on this with the puppy schedule, is 5pm the la at time you give a puppy water?

DOGGY•U

No, I typically give water up until 2 hours before bed, at which time I pick up the water dish. That being said, if for some reason they had a big play session at night or were thirsty, I would not deny them water, just know that I may have to wake up to take them out.
