Hey Folks!

This week's video is a re-release of just the training portion of an older video about kayaking with your dog that included a lot of info on choosing a kayak, other equipment for your dog, etc.

I wanted to re-release just the training portion because:

1) I spent a long time on this video and wanted to release a training-only version where you get right to the juicy training bits right away

2) This video is a video about shaping and breaking down behavior into tiny bits to build back to the overall picture.

Most of the complex training that I do is simply a matter of learning to break each behavior into its component parts to help your dog better understand what we're asking them. It's all about creating a training progression that builds on previous successes.

So, even if you're not into kayaking, I'd love for you to watch this video and think about something you're trying to teach your dog, and how you might be able to break it down into smaller bits for them so that they can feel the confidence boost that being "right" brings.

And if you're considering hitting the water with your dog, or would like to advance your dog's skills on the water to make them easier to adventure with, I know you'll enjoy this one.

Want to help me grow the DOGGY•U channel (and available resources)?

Happy Training ya'll! I hope you're staying cool and having an amazing summer!

That was so cool!! I wish I could get out on the water like this, but alas, my mobility issues don't allow me & Pistol (at 110lbs!) to go kayaking. I can still get on bigger more stable boats from a dock platform though. So I did many of the techniques you just taught to acclimate and give Pistol confidence on our big 25' Scout fishing boat. We did a smooth water canal with lots of more narrow tributaries off the main big wide canal first (versus the ocean) due to wanting the smooth ride (and no 2-3' rollers or more that could happen in the ocean!) Pistol loved it! She loved riding the bow of the boat and having the breeze in her face. We had to put up the bow shade cover up to keep Pistol safe from hot Florida sun (even at 9am!) She learned to confidently traverse the narrow pathways on each side of the center console of our boat. We took her collapsible water bowl, and I took some chilled/frozen snacks for her. In the cooler, on ice, I had some frozen kongs with good fillers. We took many shore/potty breaks, so that we weren't stressing her bladder, and getting tired as she learned how to get sea legs. 😁 Learning about the boat, getting in and out, how to behave ON the boat, was a monumental confidence builder for odd and unstable surfaces of any kind (especially like moving escalators or elevators!) The boat "simulator" worked as a great tool--AND IT WAS MORE FUN than anything!! Certainly better scenery than the walls of an elevator!!

This is an excellent post. I love how you break down the steps to assure success. My friend has a boat and this gives me some good ideas
