Q&A Live: Tuesday August 20th @11am ET (link below)

Deep Dive Live: Thursday August 22nd @1 pm ET  (link in separate upcoming post for Inner Circle & Top Fan Members) Topic: Addressing CoolWhip's Public Access Issue (details below)

PLEASE MARK YOUR CALENDAR! :)

What is a Live Q&A vs. a Deep Dive?

Live Q&A's typically last 45-60 minutes and are open to all paid DOGGY•U members. Crew and above members can submit a question prior to the live. Q&A's are recorded and you can find every Q&A I've ever done in the "Q&A" section in the "Collections" tab.

Deep Dive's typically last 30-60 minutes and are recorded, so if you can't make it to the live, the recording is posted later that day. They focus on one topic, covered in a webinar-style lecture. You can also see all previous Deep Dive's in the "Collections" tab. Deep Dive's are a member benefit for Inner Circle and Top Fan members.

LIVESTREAM Q&A INFO:

Reminder that our livestreams are via Zoom but recorded to YouTube for replay viewing after the Zoom. I will post the YouTube replay link after the event with a brief summary of the topics covered. You can always go back and watch past livestreams even if you can't be there live. Participants will be muted so please put follow-up questions that pop up during the Zoom in the chat box. Reminder that questions should be related to the topic I am currently covering and I do not take non-related questions during the Q&A.

Those members who are at the "Crew" ($10/month) level or above are able to submit one question per month with their membership. Leave that question in the comments below.

The cut-off for submitting questions is 2 days prior to the Zoom (Sunday August 18th by 11am ET is the last date to submit) so that I have time to prepare. Please limit questions to 1 per person so I have time to answer them within the hour. Questions should be general enough that I don't need to know your specific dog/behavior to answer the question (this also allows everyone to benefit from the question). If you're looking for more specific feedback on your dog, be sure to join the Top Fan membership level for video review of your training.

DEEP DIVE INFO: Addressing CoolWhip's Public Access Issue

An issue with CoolWhip's public access cropped up several months ago as a result of an acute incident that unfortunately carried over into her general work.

It's something I've wanted to talk about with you all for a while now, because, objectively, it's a really good learning opportunity and case study. Unfortunately, it was also a pretty emotional one for me for a while there as CoolWhip's handler and teammate, and I was having trouble separating my feelings about the situation from the situation in a way that I could talk more objectively and publicly about. But I'm finally at the point where I'd like to discuss it with you all because I think transparency in service dogs is really important, and I think there's a lot of value in learning from this particular incident/case study.

So in this deep dive I'm going to discuss what happened, how I handled it directly following the event, and things I've done/trained to address the issue in the months following, along with the ultimate outcome for CoolWhip and I's work together as a service dog team.

This is an incredibly difficult topic for me, but hopefully you will find it valuable on your service dog journey. Hope to see you there!

If you're an Inner Circle, Elite or Top Fan member you will receive a link to the livestream in a separate post. If you're interested in this topic and are at the Member or Crew level, you can always upgrade if this topic interests you, and get access to all past Deep Dives (2 years worth!).

Back to the Live Q&A: Please post your question for the August 20th live below in the comments!

See you next week!

Another handler and I was at Walmart the other day and my PTSD was triggered. That led to an immediate anxiety attack. Finn made me sit down where I was so he could do his thing. I started to dissociate (zone out) While this was happening the woman came out of nowhere and started yelling (at least I perceived her yelling) and according to the other handler, at me about how dogs shouldn’t be in Walmart and I was abusing my dog and she’d report me to the authorities. She also said she was going to contact the store manager to have us thrown out. All this was happening while I was having my anxiety attack and zoning out. I know this type of incident has happened to others. How would you have handled this? How have you handled people who accuse you of animal abuse?

How far away are guide dogs usually asked to find something (for example find a seat or an exit)? I know you've said they need to find an empty bus seat. Do they ever need to find a seat from farther away? Byxbee can find a seat as long as he already knows where the seat is (if its already within his field of vision, or I've back chained that specific seat). However, that's not particularly helpful in 80% of scenarios where I'd actually want that task. Is it realistic to ask a dog to search for a chair for a minute? What about 5 minutes? How do you build commitment/duration to searching during leading tasks?

OMG Laura I’m so sorry you went through something like this. (Whatever it was) huge hugs!!!!

You know our background but for the sake of others, I got a service dog for my nine year old autistic kiddo who adores dogs and felt she could do anything with a dog by her side, and she has yet to learn how to make use of his help after 18 months. That's about her self-awareness and ability to recognize when she needs help, nothing to do with him - he's perfectly willing and able to task, just never gets asked. He's easy to have around in public but of course it's easier to NOT bring him on all of our public outings, and given that she doesn't benefit much, this summer I've been leaving him home a lot more often. Since she doesn't go all that many places, that means some weeks he's doing almost no public access. My question is, what are the considerations for putting a dog's public access work on the back burner like this, and what's the minimum we need to be doing to preserve the option for the future?

Courtney Hartman

I won't actually be able to be on the live call since we're going on a little vacation, so if it doesn't make the cut this time it's totally okay! But if it does I'll be really happy to watch the replay. :)

Thank you all for your questions. Questions are now closed for prep. See you Tuesday!
