The goal of this game is to show Denver that it's valuable to look at me, even when there's distractions around, including food. I hold up food to the side of my body and wait for him to look away from the food and look at me. The behavior of looking at me (offering attention) is already in his repertoire because we've already been marking and rewarding for offered attention, I'm now adding in a distraction that he can't get to (making it slightly easier). When he looks away, he's immediately marked and rewarded.

This simple game helps explain to Denver that when presented with a distraction (like eventually a dog, or a kiddo) breaking eye contact and looking to me is always a good option.

Note that I look at Denver throughout the exercise so that my eyes are always there to meet him. Eventually I will practice with food in the other hand, both hands, and moving hands.

It’s funny, I know this game already but don’t think we’ve played it except in the context of taking a games-based course. Trip & I really need to play it again, as Trip is always distracted by the treats in my hand when he should be thinking about how to earn one, as a short session this morning so clearly showed me. So this reminder is very timely for us. Also, I hadn’t thought about your larger point that this game can help, eventually, in dealing with all kinds of distractions, not just “treats nearby.” Thanks 🙂❣️

When he's an adult, do you expect that you'll use one or two Klimb platforms for Denver? I just got one for my 65 lb lab and it's a bit small for her to settle on. Sitting and standing are just fine. TIA for any thoughts!

If it's for settling, I would need two KLIMBs, probably already need them at this point! He's gotta be 40 lbs already and all legs.

I didn’t quite see a clicker on your hand, but heard the click whenever he performed the task. Which kind of clicker are you using?
