Tether training is something that is really prevalent in the service dog world, so I was surprised when I started training pet dogs several years into my guide dog career (backwards, I know!) that it wasn't common practice!

In this video I show you how to go about training your dog to relax and hang out with the help of a tether. This skill translates well to settling in public for future service dogs, while also being an integral part of preventing unwanted puppy behavior like eliminating in the house or chewing inappropriate items.

My colleague, Casey, who you've seen on this channel, is also working on a full course on crate training and settling on a mat, and on a tether, so stay tuned for that in 2025! Patreon members will get a deep pre-sale discount as always :)

Merry Christmas to those who celebrate!

Hi Laura, our pup is a similar age to Denver and we are attempting to tether train. She can able to stay calm for the entire time with a pupsicle, then we release her. She will try to walk away on her own if we don't release her. Can you please explain the steps to increase the tethering time after the treat is finished. Thank you!

DOGGY•U

Tire her out, be sure you are right with her, also hanging out, when she's done with the treat, just hang with her. She may wander around, chew on the tether a bit, once she settles back down, quietly tell her what a good girl she is a few times and then and without fanfare release her. Basically, you need to help her be tired enough to settle after the treat and stay right with her, just like if she was off the tether. Be sure there is also another non edible chew that you can redirect to if you need to, but otherwise, just hang out together until she calms and then slowly increase time.

Hi! Could you clarify which courses you have in progress? I believe your friend is coming out with a settling course and you are coming out with a potty training course? Any I'm missing? I'm just wondering what my resources are going to look like in the beginning of April when my puppy comes home. Thanks!

DOGGY•U

Hi Victoria - I do have a settling/crate training course from Casey in progress, as well as a potty training course. Unfortunately, I do not have a firm release date on those. As soon as I do, Patreon will know :)

I just used this to see if it would help stop his bitting the leash and it worked! Picking time closer to nap time was also helpful tip. 🙏
