This month we'll be going over the AKC Canine Good Citizen Test, showing video of Denver's actual test, and talking about tips and strategies for taking the test yourself!

Yay! Thanks for this. Stóri just passed his CGC (I'm so proud of us - we couldn't have done it without you) do you have any tips for CGCA as well? I want to start prepping for the next steps. There is nothing in my area at local training groups unfortunately.

DOGGY•U

I'm hoping to have ours done in the next few weeks and will likely do a deep dive on it!

Thanks for this video Laura, very helpful to see! I’m in Canada, so our equivalent of the CGC is the Canine Good Neighbour test, but dogs have to be 12 months old to take it. We’ll definitely be working on those skills in the mean time though!

How do I train my dog to pick up stuff for me and what age do they start doing that training? I’m also trying to learn GCC and training this as well

Wendy

You didn't have several other people and dogs in the room during testing. Around here there are only 2 ways to get the CGC test that I know of. First is at a dog show with literally hundreds of people and dogs wandering around, oh, and food vendors or there is one class per year, lots of dogs and owners present, test given in a garage space with everyone standing around with their dog waiting for there turn. Seems like that's asking an awful lot of the dog in either situation. Any advice for those scenarios? Here in Wyoming we just don't have many options.

Thanks for the replay, we got so busy yesterday and forgot.

If that were my only option, it would just mean that I'd probably have to wait till Denver was ready for that higher-difficulty scenario (which could include both training *and* also waiting for him to mature a little bit if he was struggling in those types of scenarios.) To train for it, I'd focus on training in parks, tractor supply, and even at outdoor farmers markets and events where possible.

Check out the collections tab and watch the videos in the fetch/retrieve series, specifically the 3 part deep dive. This video may also be helpful if you have a natural retrieve: https://youtu.be/--EdyyaqsXA Starting retrieve training depends on the dog. Natural retrieve I'll start early, but I tend to take a break during teething so after 6 months once the teeth are all in.

I've been told that if the dog passes the CGC then tries for Trick dog novice, they only need to do 5 additional tricks. Is that correct? I thought I had seen Denver's trick dog video but now I can't find it. Help please. 😁

DOGGY•U

Yes if they pass their CGC first, you just need 5 tricks. If you check out the form on their website I believe it confirms that.

Wendy

When you give the relax que in this video you use your left hand for the que. For you, is it the same que to relax either left or right hip or do you use the hand for the hip you want him to relax on? I'm guessing same que and his choice which hip to tilt but I am curious. I'm just starting "relax" and find it definitely gives a better down stay but so far use one que and dog chooses which way to tilt his hip.

DOGGY•U

I just have one cue and he can choose. If i need him to tip a specific way I will do an exaggerated hand motion (almost luring it with my hand) with the direction I need. Otherwise it's up to him :)

Wendy

Just wanted to brag a little, we passed his CGC and trick dog novice today. Couldn't have done it without you and all of your incredible videos! Thank you!!!

Cindy

Perfect!!! I upgraded my membership to include deep dives, EXACTLY what I was looking for. Thank you so much for sharing your wisdom!!!

Bodhi and I are getting ready to take our CGC in the next 2 weeks and this was really helpful. I notice there are a lot of similarities to the ADI Public Access test which I’m familiar with so between that and this “live”, I feel pretty well prepared. THANKS AGAIN!
