Does your dog ignore you when you say "drop it"? Or worse—run off with something dangerous?

In this video, I’ll show you my game-based, conflict-free method to teach your dog (or puppy!) to reliably drop toys and household items. 🧠

Using a 3-game progression, I’ll show you how to:

  • Teach your dog to out using toy play

  • Build focus and compliance during high-arousal situations

  • Transition to distance drops

  • Lay a solid foundation for disc dog sports

This approach not only teaches your dog to drop on cue, but also builds engagement, drive, and teamwork. Perfect for active dogs, sport prospects, or anyone tired of playing keepaway!

Perfect timing! I already started Tigger on the two toy game, but I'm thrilled to see the progressions! You have genuinely made this whole process so much easier! Thank you for everything!

I recently found your videos and they've been really helpful sofar. My dog Skye is getting good at place, sit, down, leave it, find it, and kennel. The games on this video look great, but my 12 week old Brittany puppy doesn't like to play tug. He will take a toy in his mouth but drops it at the slightest resistance. Any suggestions for how I can still work on drop at a distance?

I'm so glad!! I love this progression because it's game based and so useful for having control in high arousal situations.

Thank you so much for this video…much needed. I have a 7 month golden retriever pup and was looking to become service dog for my ptsd. He sometimes will get something like a piece of clothing and refuses to drop it and actually starts growling. How do I apply this video to my situation…..I mean he won’t drop for anything. If you could provide any insight it would be greatly appreciated and thank you so much for your content.

HI John - that sounds a lot like resource guarding behavior. That's something I would get professional help with as RG can escalate. You'll want to look for a positive reinforcement trainer. In the meantime, the book "mine" by Jean Donaldson can give you a bit of an insight into resource guarding protocols: https://amzn.to/3Yxfvn1 Some library's even have it to borrow.

What discs do you use? I'm always afraid that regular Frisbees would be too hard and could hurt their mouth when teaching them to catch them. Is there a soft version you use at first or???
