Whether you want to train your dog to fetch water, a snack, or medication from the fridge as a service dog task to mitigate your disability, or have them retrieve a beer as a fun party trick, this video is the full step-by-step tutorial on how to get it done.

It's also a primer on how and why I use backchaining for many complex behaviors.

Enjoy!

You said there is a video on teaching shutting the door. Im new, so I'm sure I'm just lost. I can't seem to find it. Can you link it? Or tell me where?

Lisa Vasilatos

Ohhh yay! I found it on YouTube. Thanks. I've been wanting to get him to close the door. He (on his own) figured out how to open it to come inside, but then leaves it open!

Hi I have a Shetland sheepdog can this little dog open up a door

DOGGY•U

Probably! Depends on their strength/force with the pull and suction on the door. Plus the height of the door. So if this is a task you need, I'd consider a smaller fridge specifically for your dog (if they can't open what you currently have).

This is an awesome video. Yes, please more step by step videos like this. I'm trying to teach get a cane (across the room or in another room) and pick up a dropped cane. I haven't figured out the exact steps I need to break it down to but I just started with it today. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Wish I taught our SDiT this way. I taught our 5 month old lab to bring water from the case of water bottles. She has so much fun that she keeps bringing water. The real trick is getting her to stop. I stopped asking so she wouldn’t get discouraged. Will this get better with age? She is almost 9 months old now

DOGGY•U

Hey Elizabeth! I spoke about this a bit on this month's Q&A - definitely check it out.
