Hey All!

I wanted to post an unedited example of what a typical morning training session looks like with my puppy's kibble. This session ran a little long at just under 7 minutes including the toy play at the end, but I wanted to show you how many things I can work on in short succession with my puppies morning cup of kibble. A few good reps of different behaviors is better than long sessions focusing on one single behavior.

When I train my puppy at each meal, even if it's only for 1-3 minutes, I get a solid few minutes of training a day which, when done consistently, will give me excellent results. Training at meals also makes my puppy mentally tired which means a more restful puppy that gets into less trouble ;)

I loved this so much, I’m sorry if I just haven’t found them yet but do you have any videos going over these specific behaviors for puppies? I’d love to be around this level at this age! Or do you have some kind of pdf for a rough obedience schedule for puppies? Like at x week they can start learning y training or at least introducing it? ty in advance!

Hey Nami! Glad you enjoyed the video! So I don't have videos that are puppy-specific, as all the behaviors/videos I do can be taught to puppies or adults (assuming there isn't any jumping involved). Just adjust length of time spent on the skill based on the age of the puppy. Ie. very short sessions for puppies. The second question I get asked a lot and unfortunately, the answer is - I don't. Every dog or puppy is different. I add in behaviors based on the individual dog and what they excel at and where they are in training. It's individual for every dog. Some behaviors I tend to teach first are eye contact, hand touch, place, come to heel, sit, and down. However, it really depends. There's no timeline with puppies, and I don't focus too much on adding words for things. The most important thing at this young age is to develop a love of learning and working with me, and each individual dog is different. I know that's an annoying answer because it's not concrete, but dog training is both art and science, which makes general prescriptions hard. That being said, you might want to check out this spreadsheet that I try to update every few months. It has all my videos and different topics they cover. I try to categorize them, and one of the things I categorize by is "puppy". You can also type puppy into the search bar: https://tinyurl.com/doggyu-community

This was awesome to watch! Great video thanks for sharing! I haven't added the platform to my training yet but I can probably start that tomorrow. I never thought about ending the training sessions with play! I'm definitely going to start doing that too.

I’m glad you enjoyed it! I don’t always end it with play but I like to be able to incorporate both into a session, especially for sport dogs (Osa is not and has different rules due to her guide dog status) but I do almost always end sessions in a cookie scatter to signify the end of the session for the dog.

That makes sense. Sometimes my puppies keep trying offering behaviors after the training session is over and aside from giving them the rest of their meal I really wasn't sure how to let them know that we're done.

It also gives you a chance to clean up the props that you're using so it's clear that the session is over.

Love this! Osa is such an adorable and attentive learner! Maybe for a future YouTube video, you could do a “day in the life” with Osa. Would love to see how you balance out different aspects of her training over the course of a day!

I would definitely like to do this video! I actually started it but was so tired from being up all night with her having some bowel troubles that i quickly abandoned it lol! Once I get home (I'm placing a guide dog in new york right now) I'll set aside some time to make it! Great suggestion!
