February Patreon Live Q&A

I’m also realizing that you deal with highly intelligent breeds lol. At the shelter/rescue I’ve been blessed with smart dogs that catch on quickly, but right now have a dog that seems a little errrr thick headed shall we say? LoL is patience the key or something else for our slower minded furry friends? 🐶

Hey everyone! Thanks for the questions! Added them to the roster for next week's Q&A!

I had no idea how much I would be thinking about the neighbors' dogs when I brought home a new puppy... on either side there's a dog that's a bit of a 'yard dog' and a barker, and the other side is a very sweet dog who was rescued from a lab and is a bit of a whimperer. (fans of The Holiday might say he's a 'mayjah weepuh'). The barking dog (visible through a chain fence) generally makes Valley want to leave and go inside, but if hears the other dog whining (through a solid wood fence) he'll want to bark at the fence. I've been trying to keep Valley from running into them while he's particularly impressionable, but there are some times where it just happens. How should I manage it or at least mitigate the influence of the habits of the neighbors?

Happy to talk about this, as I dealt with this situation at a house I had in hartford. Spoiler alert though, it was eventually annoying enough that I moved ... 😂😂😂 But I did do stuff in the meantime that was helpful.

There was a thread on Reddit recently about this very thing, and wow - neighbors can be TOUGH. :-)

I was working with a dog that would be aggressive towards other male dogs. Did great with females. Very alpha. I’m aware of redirecting their energy by walking the other direction, blocking their view, turning them around and making them sit. Cesar Milan (I can almost hear the gasps…) taught a technique of pinning the dog down on their side until they relaxed. This is a small dog. I was in a play group and sitting, no way to jump up without tripping over other small dogs. So I pinned him. It worked. Took awhile. The male dog he went after, they were fine with one another after that and I got him to sniff the other dogs butt. I’m aware this is not ideal, but I’m not sure what else to do in such a situation. I’m also graduating to larger, stronger dogs. Got bit on my first day 🙈😂😅 (stepped on his foot, oy) Suggestions? Tips? Tricks? Saving Grace? 🙏🏼 Thanks love!

I think my question is could you talk a lil bit about what types of corrections you use for example with Nuisance/excitement whining? I’m coming out of a program that used none… so trying to find middle ground I guess, like I’m thinking a water spray bottle would fix my problem, but that was a huge no no to even talk about over there. So 🤷🏻‍♀️ If Chloe knows what’s next ie getting ready for a walk (I’m disabled takes a bit to get ready and I use a mobility scooter to walk them so it’s a high value walkie,) she whines. She knows “quiet” but not unless I’m super firm, I can’t just say “quiet” in normal speaking voice and have her listen for more than a few mins and on really bad mental health days I can’t take it at all and resorted to stomping feet and clapping hands and saying NO (another thing not allowed, in other program) that usually works but she starts back up after some time. Nothing makes her get it, that what I want is for her to stay quiet. I had that, no whining then (old program told me to do something that messed her up and now I have this problem as a result.) (trying to give you info: I was at 30 mins time of place completely silent, but because I did not get there by using treats, when they found out they told me to start over with her place training using treats (to make her love the mat) and asking her to place on mat and feed her caused her to start whining. Then the whining just exploded over to all the time . And I’m just 🤷🏻‍♀️ except a water spray with a firm no, I think that would do it…. But what do you think. Sorry if this is too long, just tell me!! Thanks so much!!!

Hey everyone - so I have all these questions recorded for Thursday. Just a note, because this group continues to grow (thank you all!) I'm going to start to shut down questions at noon, two days before the livestream. This gives me enough time to gather my thoughts and prepare for the livestream. I know this is a change, but i appreciate your patience as I navigate a this growing group. And thank you all for being here!

Laura that sounds super reasonable!! Ps follow up today was her best “quiet” day ever so I think I’m hitting the end of this problem (thank god) just so u know.

Thank you so much!!! I am wanting to use all positive as much as possible so no worries at all! I loved everything you said! And I totally appreciate the ability to ask and say “hey this is the last thing I know, what do you have that’s better?” Cause we were not allowed to even ask at last place so thank you!! I’ll get back to to you about it. So far I’ve just been rewarding the quiet, but I couldn’t before I started saying the no first. Now that I said no a few times she understands what I want I’ve just been rewarding the quiet, and if she gets a whine in I stop moving or ignore it. So thanks!! I’ll get back with u soon about it!!

Sounds good Melody! I appreciate all questions. I want this to be a safe space to ask questions and get help working through possible responses :) Let me know how the Karen Overall Protocol goes - it's really helpful for so many dogs.

Hey Everyone! Thank you all for being here today! I posted the leash request on the most recent post for the live. I want to be clear that this is a safe space to ask questions. If you have a question, it’s likely someone else has the same question. I am here to help and give you new or different tools to help work through a problem. There are no stupid/wrong questions, and I'm not sure if I made that clear today, so I wanted to post this. I'm very happy you are all here, and this has been one of my favorite additions to the business this past year, so thank you for showing up and making the world a better place for dogs <3
