Angela

Any other tips for bringing a new puppy home on a flight?

DOGGY•U

Hey Angela - I've actually never flown a puppy! Only adults! But all similar advice applies. Bring lots for them to do, tire them out beforehand. Bring potty pads for the bottom of their kennel as they are not capable of holding it for long periods of time at this age. Make sure the breeder gets them used to the crate well before the flight so they are comfortable sleeping in it.

Hi Laura! We have an overnight flight to the US coming up next month and I’m super anxious. Here in Brazil, my dog is not recognized as a Service Dog due to my invisible disability not being recognized as a disability here. Because of this, we haven’t been able to train in movie theatres (there are pet friendly sessions once a month in another city, but mu schedule has not been lining up with theirs, so we haven’t been able to attend yet. We also cannot use public transportation because of this, he basically has no public access here :( We’ve been training a lot in large bus stations, where people wheel around large bags and whatnot and at every opportunity head over to the airport to do some training as well. Any recomendations? Also I booked an overnight on a Monday-Tuesday because I think it’ll be easier for him to settle on the plane at around bedtime. What should our schedule look like that weekend before and the day of? I don’t want him super duper exhausted on the night of because then he might not be as motivated(?), but at the same time I need him to be tired enough to sleep through the night, you know? Should we go for a hike the day before and regular 1h walk the morning? Is a walk in the afternoon, right before heading to the airport, a good idea? It’s about a two hour drive to the airport and our trainer (not specific to service dogs) is driving us there, so he’ll have plenty of opportunity to sleep in the car.

Ana

Also, is what should we do at the airport while we wait for the flight? Walk around to tire him out after the car nap or have him settle? He’s a very energetic dog hahahah

Great Video - LOTs of good stuff! I do not think I will be flying with Kenji any time, but it was very interesting!

This video is amazing! So complete! We have our first flight coming up soon, and after watching this video my mood went from anxious (I had so many questions) to excited (I now know what to expect)! As always Laura, you rock!! Thank you sooo much for all your guidance! P.d: I have a feeling that this video will be top 3 in my list of “videos seen more than once”

Laura, if the flight is not in the morning, how many hours prior to the flight would you recomen to remove food and water? Do you have some rule of thumb for that?

This video showed up JUST IN TIME! We're prepping for our first flight next month, and have already been doing movies and public transit, so it's good to know we've been targeting the right things!

DOGGY•U

I suppose that would depend on the dog and how well they hold it, but generally if the flight were later in the day I'd probably do 1/4-1/3 breakfast in the morning and remove water 4-5 hours before you leave for the flight, as long as I know I can get the dog to relieve easily. Obviously, if you did something that got the dog hot/thirsty before the flight, give water but don't let them tank up on a whole bowl.

DOGGY•U

That's awesome to hear that you're already well prepared! Glad the video was helpful! :)

Gearing up for our flights next Sunday - one of the planes we’re in is not a Cessna but that size plane! This was a nice refresher!
