Service Dog Tasks: MEDICATION REMINDER & Medication RETRIEVE Training Tips

Join the DoggyU Community to watch me train this behavior start to finish, unedited! Patreon.com/DoggyU Products Used: KLIMB DOG PLATFORM: https://amzn.to/3keqtN1 Daily Medication Container: https://amzn.to/3wtd5Ya In this video I discuss helpful tips when thinking about training a medication reminder or medication alert and a medication retrieve for your service dog. This service dog task can be useful for a variety of disabilities including various psychiatric service dogs (MDD, ADHD, PTSD etc.) as well as diabetic alert dogs, and any other disabilities that require medication either at a particular time every day or during a medical event. The reminder can be taught separately and used to help you remember things like eating, taking a walk, taking a shower etc. The medication retrieve can also be taught as a separate task. LOVE IT. Do you have a full "retrieve" tutorial? How do you create a softer mouth or distinguish between "retrieve" and "hold"?

DOGGY•U

I don't. I have been wanting to do one but logistically it's a problem. I don't want to show you my dogs that have a hold, but training one requires that I have like a few 3 minute sessions with a dog a day, which logistically, without it living in my house and having some prerequisite skills makes it challenging. Also teaching a shaped retrieve can take quite a while for a lot of dogs I have some ideas, but that likely won't be a project until after March. Hold is a component of the retrieve but it's the first thing I teach. It's the part where the dog learns to hold it until asked to release it and to always release it to my hand. Think of it like backchaining. The last thing they do is hold it and then release it to my hand. It's the harder part so I teach it first and then once we're working on going back through the chain, they have the most experience delivering it to me. I use shaping for it. If you're looking to train it, Donna Hill has a great retrieve course for SDs :)
