Hey Ya'll!

In this video I introduce Whip to the alarm sound for the first time. I want to condition her that the alarm is important and valuable to her. I do this by pairing the alarm with the food. So the alarm going off triggers me to reach for high value rewards. This is exactly the same process as "loading the clicker".

Alarm predicts high value reinforcer

As time goes on, I will pair the alarm with recalling her to me for that reward.

Happy Training!

Laura, one of the tasks I really need to train my dog to do is to wake me up when my alarm goes off (I’m a very heavy sleeper with narcolepsy and don’t hear the alarm or anything else when I am asleep, so the task has to be touch-related). It’s the same base as a medical alert, but I understand this might be a tougher task to train because when the time comes for him to alert me when I am actually sleeping, if he does do it, but for some reason I don’t wake up right away, I won’t be able to mark and reward for kind-of-right behaviour, which might frustrate him. I live alone and we train with a trainer only once a week, so I can’t really rely on anyone else to be there to mark and reinforce him in case I don’t… any ideas or tips to help me build a good roadmap for this task? 😅 Thanks!

You want to think hard about what the task should be that he does to wake you up. It might be turning the lights on, or pulling the covers off you, or even standing on you. Then you'll have to practice a TON before using it in real life. It's definitely challenging, specifically because of the things you mentioned, but certainly doable. Just have to practice practice practice and make sure the wake-up behavior is a good fit and likely to be successful.
