This video will benefit pet and service dog guardians alike! There are so many more than you would think! Enjoy an afternoon out with your dog this weekend!

I also discuss:

  • How I start training in dog-friendly stores
  • How I choose dog-friendly locations for a young dog

  • When I start considering non-dog-friendly stores for my SDiT
  • How to know if your dog is comfortable in new locations

This is great! We are doing a mix of pet friendly and non pet friendly stores right now. My biggest worry is my dog seeing other dogs at pet friendly stores, and getting it in his mind that other dogs barking and being excited is normal. I don’t want to encourage him to get excited as well.

Yeah your timing just could not be better. You psychic person you. ;) I commented on the youtube. I love your list. Could you put that list one somewhere?

Eve

I was surprised to learn that CVS is pet friendly. (At least some stores). I think that's the closest to non-pet friendly you can get while still being pet friendly.

DOGGY•U

Hmm - i just googled it and I couldn't find anywhere it says pet friendly. Where did you find this? That would be a good add to the list!

DOGGY•U

I plan to make a post and make this directly once the video is out for the week to see if I need to add anything so it's more comprehensive. Don't worry, it's in the plan! :)

DOGGY•U

Great point that I definitely think about when I'm choosing locations! Great for training against but your dog has to be ready for it.

Jay Johnston

Individual stores can be. Not in New Mexico. Oh how I wish. This one would be so good with the low amt of people but enough enough activity to make it worthwhile.

Angela

Do you have any videos on dealing with other dogs off leash?

I recently began to practice settling during an outdoor yoga class! My dog used to jump up as soon as he saw me standing up. Now he waits for the cue 👌👌👌

Talking about kinds and stores… I was at a store and a kid decided to throw his ball at my dog!! thankfully it was a very soft ball so my dog just moved and got closer to me… but I don’t want to imagine how bad everything could have turned

DOGGY•U

Nice! That's "learned irrelevance". Dog learns that in the context of yoga, you standing up is irrelevant :)

DOGGY•U

Wow! I always tell people expect to be surprised by what happens in public, because all the weird and crappy things will eventually happen. Glad Tuca did well!

Before I even take a SDIT inside any store I always see how they doing outside in front of the store and evaluate their body language. If they showing signs of stress here I won’t take them inside. Work on more confident building and decentralization. Before I try again. My first inside store visit once they are fine outside will be in and pretty much right back outside. I also find garden centers can be a great pet friendly area during the less busy times. Lots of great info in this video.

At what age do you like to do the CGC test? I've heard some say as young as 6 months, others a year. I know it depends on the dog but what is a good goal if I'm starting with a 10 week old puppy?

Wendy

You say you don't recommend pet stores for young dogs. What about in a stroller or is it still too much?

DOGGY•U

A stroller could be fine in a pet store for short periods. You really have to observe your dog and watch their body language. We're looking for relaxed body language.

DOGGY•U

Like you've heard, it depends on the dog. That will be a goal I'm looking towards soon for Denver, but if he's not ready at 6 months, there's no rush.
