I wanted to bring you this live demo from Clicker Expo 2023 with Jamie Popper and her dog Pique who is an Australian Koolie just like CoolWhip. They're actually related! Pique's mom is CoolWhip's genetics from a different litter.

Hopefully this gives you some more canine fitness ideas that you can do at home!

And just a word about fitness equipment. Yes, this stuff is an investment. I do offer a discount through your Patreon membership when ordered through me (reach out in the message function for pricing).

But also, a lot of times you can make your own stuff! When I was first starting out, I made a lot of props out of wood with yoga mat glued or stapled to the top. You'll occasionally still see me using that stuff in my videos! Also, many of these exercises can be done on the flat first. So, modify and use what you've got right now! Your dog will love it!

So nice to see appropriate attention given—before the fitness demo—to encouraging attention and “going operant.” Another opportunity for me to watch a competent trainer model great handling and thoughtful rapport. The AKC “Fit Dog” program was news to me—will check it out. Excellent points made re: puppies and senior dogs. I also found it helpful to see what a properly fitted Balance harness looks like—something I’m still fine-tuning. Super interesting, educational demo by an excellent presenter and her canine partner! Thanks for the demo Jamie and Pique and thanks for sharing it, Laura! Pique is such a sweet ham. ❤ Also: how cool that Pique and Whip are related! (From Canada, I’ll venture to guess? I’ve been browsing…) On home-made equipment: yes! Just made Trip a couple of standard-sized training platforms this winter out of 1/2” birch plywood from Lowe’s. I cut them to match commercial sizes, rounded the corners and sanded everything, then added 3” hairpin legs on the smaller one and conveniently foldable 12” hairpin legs on the taller one (legs from Amazon). Topped the plywood using 24x24 foam tiles I had lying around, which I attached at the corners with big rubber bands. They work great! Of course there’s no substitute I can think of for the squishy Blue 9s. :-)

Ha yes - Pique is actually from a different breeder in the US (Wildwood Koolies), but same lines. And yay for making equipment! I have equipment I made 13 years ago with boards and yoga mat that I still use regularly! :)
