Q&A Live: Tuesday 04/18/23 @10:00am ET (link below)

Special Topics Live: Finding a Service Dog Prospect, My Journey and Tips (Inner Circle, Elite, Top Fan): Thursday 04/27/23 @9:30 am ET (link in separate post)

PLEASE MARK YOUR CALENDAR! :)

Reminder that our livestreams are via Zoom and I will post the YouTube replay link after the event with a brief summary of the topics covered. You can always go back and watch past livestreams even if you can't be there live. Participants will be muted so please put follow-up questions that pop up during the Zoom in the chat box. Reminder that questions should be related to the topic I am currently covering. If I forget to turn closed captioning on, please remind me!

Those members who are at the "Crew" ($6/month) level or above are able to submit one question per month with their membership.

The cut-off for submitting questions is 2 days prior to the Zoom (Saturday April 15th) so that I have time to prepare. Please limit questions to 1 per person so I have time to answer them within the hour. Questions should be general enough that I don't need to know your specific dog/behavior to answer the question (this also allows everyone to benefit from the question). If you're looking for more specific feedback on your dog, be sure to join the Elite or Top Fan membership level for video review of your training.

The Special Topics livestream this month is going to be on Finding a Service Dog Prospect/Breeder/Breed. I've been on a journey over the past year to find a service dog prospect for myself and I want to share that process, how I am going about it, red flags that you can look for in your search, as well as helpful tips for what to look for and how to make sure you get the best candidate you can to both mitigate your disability, and fit your lifestyle. And hopefully by the time this livestream comes around I'll have some new to share ;) While this talk will be geared towards my search for a service dog, the advice on finding a breeder and breed is applicable to both SD and pet dogs.

To access this special topics livestream, a link will appear on the feed for Inner Circle and Elite members later today. If this interests you, you can upgrade your membership at any time, and as always, you can watch any past livestream replays, both special topics and Q&A.

Back to the Live Q&A: Please post your questions for the March 20th livestream below in the comments! See you next week!

Can you list the outline and props you use for teaching FMP? I am a horrible "lumper," and I have a hard time listing the baby steps to teaching something. What are some troubleshooting tips for a dog who pulls too much into the harness, and how to get them to slow down and apply steady pressure into the harness? Basically, can you go over your training roadmap for FMP and tips and tricks for teaching it?

Sarah Scott

Oops just saw it said X1 Q to a person. So I removed my others. But if no one else posts, I have a few more :)

Valerie

New Patreon member and this is my first comment I am confused on what question I should ask. I have my prospect already but I do have questions about training him… Like how do I get him to stay on one side for a walk? He constantly crosses behind me or cuts in front of me. I feel like I am going to trip over him. He’s a 16 (almost 17) week old standard poodle

Eve

Can you talk about what the deal is with having two service dogs? Do they need to be trained different tasks or can you just have another dog as backup? Is there a limit to how many service dogs someone can have?

DOGGY•U

Hi Valerie! Welcome! I'm so glad you're here! The good news is that I have a couple videos on this already to start helping you out, and I'm also releasing two new videos, one tonight, and one next week, that should also be helpful! Here's some public videos I have available: Step 1: https://youtu.be/wrd89bJtk28 Step 2: https://youtu.be/LfBfUQIv3Aw And then look for the link to the new video, ad-free tonight for a helpful strategy to manage your LLW skills while you're working on them. As far as asking questions, check out a couple of the Live Q&A replays for ideas for what type of questions I've answered or what works well for that format. The most recent ones have an outline of what is covered, and I'm working on a database for that as well. I hope that gives you a place to get started!

Last week my service dog in training was attacked by a German Shepherd that was loose in its front yard as my husband walked our dog past the house in our neighborhood. Fortunately he seems to be recovering well from the injuries, both physical and emotional, but my husband felt so helpless during the attack and it took the other dog's owner to pull her dog off of ours. To the extent you are able (I recognize this may be outside the scope of your expertise and if so, just let me know), how should one respond in the moment in that kind of situation, and/or how can we best help our dog regain confidence after such an awful experience? The other dog's owner has taken full responsibility and says she won't ever allow her dog to be loose in the front yard in the future.

I would love to learn about when it may be appropriate to train your pet dog (or intended pet dog) as a service dog: what are the drawbacks, difficulties, and possibilities?

DOGGY•U

I'm sorry this happened to you. I can definitely talk more about this as I do have quite a bit of personal experience with it.

DOGGY•U

Thanks everyone for your great questions this month! Questions are now closed. See you Tuesday at 10am ET!

Becky Coley

Question. Can your service dog sleep with you?

DOGGY•U

Hey Becky! This livestream already happened, so stay tuned for a call for questions for the May livestream, but yes, absolutely your service dog can sleep with you. I do recommend waiting till at least they are fully potty trained, but I tend to crate my young dogs until about one year old before allowing them on the bed. That's a personal preference to prevent destructive behavior.
