Hey Folks!

In this video I show you how I get and maintain loose leash walking with my dogs by preserving the collar or front clip as "only for walking loosely in heel position" and the harness for "doing dog stuff". I also talk about why this strategy works so well, especially for your puppies who aren't capable of heeling for long periods of time yet!

As always, ad-free until release on Friday.

Happy Training!

Wow! Fantastic training video!! Your editing and delivery are (as always) amazing! I feel like I’ve picked up the parts and pieces of this from so many places, yet never heard it so thoroughly brought together like this. This is a classic example of one of those where-the-rubber-hits-the-road videos you make. I know that with your years of guide dog training, you are backed up by tons of experience and research not only into how best to achieve and maintain LLW, but also how to place it into the context of daily life by doing ongoing training, and providing appropriate play time and plenty of long-line sniffing opportunities. What really impressed me in your LLW protocol is your emphasis on rigorously protecting *clarity* for your dog by strictly reserving the collar or front attachment for signaling attentive LLW and the back attachment for signaling freedom to explore and sniff (while still maintaining the no-pull rule). (And I was a bit surprised by—but trust you—on a dog’s ability to make the distinction between front and back attachments while the harness remains on. That’s nice because constantly removing and replacing a harness in the middle of a walk is just unrealistic.) Your emphasis on clarity for your dog goes beyond anything I’ve heard elsewhere, and it makes so much sense. A guide dog above all would need rigorous clarity about work time vs. “off” time, so I really trust your training videos. This is where I find the unique value in DoggyU—plus the benefit of your expertise in clarity of delivery to us, your students, again backed by many years of professional practice. My pet dog doesn’t need flawless training (thank god!) or super-high reliability, but who doesn’t want that for their pet dog?? I’m here to at least try to thoroughly integrate how a really top R+ trainer of working dogs does things, and then challenge myself to emulate that. Thanks!!!

Thanks Wendy! Some of that clarity also comes from how I behave. So when I clip to the back clip, not only is the physical leash in a different position, but also my body, leash length, engagement reflect my expectations. The whole picture I believe, is what the dog can distinguish expectations from. And yes, clarity, clarity, clarity :) Have a great weekend!

So glad it was good timing Kori! Stay tuned for next week - I'll be talking about leash skills for humans, which I think is an often overlooked topic :) Have a great weekend!

Love your protocol on this topic.
