Hey Folks!

Here is my latest video on my service dog journey to finding the right breed and breeder for me. I outline my process, how I thought about breeds, and then once I picked a breed, how I go about researching, choosing, and contacting a breeder. Hopefully this will be helpful on your own journey!

I want to be clear that this is my criteria, with my goals, and my preferences. Your journey may look different, but hopefully the questions I pose will help you decide what is right for you.

Hi Laura thank you for the video. I am new to doggy•u but love the training methods utilized. I am taking the first steps to work with a nonprofit organization to obtain a service dog to help mitigate my CPTSD and Bipolar Depression. Usually when I am not depressed I am moderately to highly active. I will be getting an 8 week old puppy and starting from the ground up, which is preferable considering I have four cats in the household. I do have experience with high energy pet dogs; for example, my childhood dog was a female American Eskimo that I would always walk and skate around with. The prospective dog that I have noticed is the best candidate for me is a Belgian Malinois since I need DPT, crowd control, medication, sleep, and wake up reminders, and need a dog that will keep up with me on trails since I will be studying for my nutrition science degrees for a few years and will have the opportunity to hike every morning again. When I go through deep depression episodes I need a dog who will motivate me to get out of bed and get moving. My half Maine Coon mix Houdini who just turned eight years old April 20th has been an amazing cuddle buddy, but cannot help me the way I need unfortunately. I also would like to enter my dog in sports later on like dock diving since I was a competitive swimmer growing up for ten years and love swimming and diving off docks myself. I know a Belgian Mal is not the ideal service dog but think it will fit with my lifestyle best. By any means am I saying I'm special and it's going to fall into place. I plan on putting in the work needed to be successful, granted the trainer through the foundation will test and select the puppy for me through trusted breeders. I plan on acquiring as much knowledge through this site as possible to supplement training from the trainer and have this process go as smoothly as possible. Also due to being a chef my dog will mainly have meals made by me and I plan on adopting your food method of trail mix and two Kong meals daily.

DOGGY•U

Hi Tori - Welcome to DOGGY•U! Like I mentioned in the video, what I talked about on the livestream is about my journey and what works best for me, as well as my experience successfully placing service dogs for 14 years. I work in probabilities when talking about breed choices, as well as recommendations for my clients. My goal is to make my client's as successful as possible reaching their goals. I've also primarily worked with GSDs for the majority of my time training and placing dogs, as well as live with two herding dogs, so I know general tendencies and how many of these dogs aren't suited for public access work or aren't happy doing the job. You do not need to justify your breed choices to me. There are some successful Mal SDs out there. The point is, there aren't many in comparison to other breeds. If you're willing to take that risk and have a plan for what to do if the dog doesn't work out (just like anyone taking on any SD prospect should) than do what works best for you and the organization you're going through. That being said, if you are looking for Mal energy but with a temperament that is generally more suited to service dog work, I highly recommend checking out field line labs, as they are often referred to as Mals in lab bodies. They will have no problem keeping up with your active lifestyle and sport goals. As you heard on the live, I have an incredibly active life too and I'm not worried at all about their stamina. But it sounds like you're going through an organization that will hopefully help you find a breeder with proven service dog lines (probably show-line mals). Just remember that herding dogs (and really any dog) can be highly affected by the emotions of the handler so you'll want to talk to your organization on how to mitigate the affects of any episodes you may have on your growing puppy. Thanks for joining! Happy Training!

Thank you very much for your response and I will definitely take your suggestion into account and look into field line labs.

ExplorerJean

This was very informative, thank you. Are you able to recommend a service dog breeder? I live in Connecticut and will be researching for a good dog breeder. I was thinking either a Lab or a Golden retriever

DOGGY•U

Hey Explorer Jean! I'm a bit hesitant to recommend specific breeders, as what you want/ are looking for may be vastly different than what others want or are looking for. I do recommend you check out the facebook group "Uncensored breeder recommendations" on facebook. If you use the search function there you can see a lot of discussion around service dog breeders, especially for labs and goldens. Hopefully that will help you make a list of ones to look into. You can even post your requirements, location and distance and see what people recommend! Best, Laura
