Hey DOGGY•U Community!

Hope you're having a wonderful Wednesday!

So I have a couple ideas for this month's Special Topics Live, but I wanted to get your feedback.

For those of you that are new, the Special Topics Lives are a monthly deep dive into a specific topic, review of one of my current cases, problem solving etc. that last about a half an hour (but let's be real - they always run over). They are available to Inner Circle and Elite members, and you can always upgrade for the month if you find a topic that you're really into and want to join or watch the replay.

Previous topics include:

• reviewing two puppy tests and walking through how I chose a particular puppy

• trainers toolkit where I went over the basic elements of luring, shaping, capturing, targeting, and other positive reinforcement training methods

• Problem solving for elevators and escalators

• Review of a puppy test I did and walking through whether we would choose this candidate for service dog work

• and several other topics

So, I'm seeking topics that you might want me to cover in a half-hour, more intimate livestream session.

Feel free to drop your burning questions or deep dive interests down below! If I don't get to them this month, I'll keep them handy for topic or video ideas.

** please note that questions must be broad enough that I don’t need to know your dog or situation to discuss the topic

Thanks for your input and have a great day!

I would be interested in talking further about doing dog sports with your service dog. Specifically the challenges that training a service dog for some dog sports may present or what sports seem to gel well with service trained dogs. I have a dog I’m owner-training to be a service dog and through the training process I’ve found that she has throughly enjoyed learning certain things that make me think oh maybe she might also enjoy trick training or some other dog sport - I don’t know that many. Maybe that could be part of the talk too?

I’d love to talk about reinforcing and strengthening skills. For example, strengthening a ‘leave it’ or ‘stay’. How often to practice, how to build the skill, etc.

Chill out and disconnect on their place/bed. My BC will stay just fine but has not learned how to really relax. If I move about, he is always aware of what I am doing.

Getting enough exercise for an 11 month old lab puppy so I’m not pulled around! We rescued her a week ago. If we had a pool, that would be great for her to get enough exercise safely.

Thanks for all the suggestions everyone! I will keep this list. The shorter ones I might just take and answer in this month's live Q&A for everyone. The other ones I'll keep in mind as topics. Some of these are best answered with my own puppy so I might have to wait a bit. But I'm actively making plans to try to get some of the dogs on my roster that I'd need to tape some of these other topics as either private or public videos. I'm headed off to Acadia for a long weekend. Have a great weekend with your dogs!

How to get my puppy to pick up any random thing that is dropped…

DOGGY•U

Hey Morgan! I'd like to talk about this in the live Q&A this month vs. the special topics. Can you repost it for the Q&A when I put out that post in the next couple days?

Hi laura. I've had some clients using wheelchairs lately. How to safely manage your dog from a wheelchair off lead to stretch its legs and run & have doggy-time (dovetails into recall I assume). training object retrieval from wheelchair....if dog buggers off with the objects apropos to attaching a long line to the objects :-)

DOGGY•U

Hey Em! Because I've worked with people who use wheelchairs, but it's not my specialty, I'd check out some of Cooperative Paws resources who is likely more a specialist in this: https://cooperativepaws.com/ One of my clients uses a power-chair to keep their dog on lead, but able to blow off steam with a bit of a run. For the retrieve, I'd start with splitting out the hold and backchaining. Put the object on a string, and teach the return to hand, potentially with a "toes" behavior (teach the dog end position as their feet on the handlers feet to get them close enough - teach as a separate skill and then incorporate the hold) all of that will likely help with the taking the retrieval object and peacing out with it problem. I always also teach the retrieve as a shaped behavior and not a play retrieve. Hope that made sense!

Great answers. Thanks Laura. will check out cooperative paws. I know Donna Hill also has some good resources. cheers.

DOGGY•U

Yes she definitely does! I think Cooperative Paws has been doing some short reels on it recently as well on instagram.
