Hey Friends!

So ... accidentally sent a public email with the new video on it ... which means I'll probably release it publicly either tonight or tomorrow morning. Sorry about that Patreon folks! In any event - here it is!  (this is what happens when you're rushing trying to get packed for a weekend away! lol)

Kayaking with my dogs has been a pretty big passion of mine for a long time, and when I moved back to CT from CO, and was living just a few minutes from the river, the river became a big part of how I spend my recreational time.

So in this video I talk about the equipment I use to kayak with my dog, considerations for choosing a kayak, as well as how to train your dog to be comfortable around and on a kayak. Even if you have no intention of kayaking, you may find it helpful to watch the process for training your dog to be comfortable with a new item and in a new environment.

If you have questions, throw them in the comments on YouTube and as always, like, comment, and share with a friend to help this video gain traction with the YouTube algorithm. Thanks ya'll! Happy paddling!

This was fun and different and I really enjoyed it! One of the things I like most about your videos is your emphasis on the amount of time you invest in training new behaviors, using lots and LOTS of repetition, while progressing towards your goal in tiny increments (splitting). I especially like seeing the sped-up parts showing just how many times you click-reinforce for a new behavior before moving on. Because of this, Jake and Whip appeared to see your kayak as just another big piece of training equipment undoubtedly leading—like everything else in their life with you—to cookies and joy. Tho we have ultra light 1-person kayaks, for bringing dogs along we prefer using our old canoe or, more often, our heavy rotomold, 2-person, sit-in kayak. The rotomold is virtually indestructible—so doggie toenails are not a problem, nor is running the boat aground to load and unload. Our dogs lie on top old life jackets in the bottom of the boat to keep them up out of puddles. Their chins rest on the gunnels as they doze or watch the world float by. We made our worst errors of judgement in decades past. In particular, we learned that a dog without a lifejacket tends to sink like a stone in icy, high elevation lakes. This was when one of our basenjis leapt out of the boat without warning, and had sunk almost out of reach before we were able to snatch him back to safety—that was a VERY scary lesson. Our first English shepherd, Luke, couldn’t tolerate seeing us in separate boats. So with him we had to ride together in the 2-person rotomold, his 75-pound body squeezed between my husband’s legs, or else leave him at home. He was very conscientious about keeping his herd together. If we’d equipped ourselves properly and trained as patiently and methodically as you do, I’m sure we could have avoided these issues. So thank you for showing how properly equip, accustom and train a dog to safely enjoy kayaking. Whether it’s a walk, ride or float, it’s just not half the fun without a happy dog along. The calm, happy dogs in your boat make it all look effortless, like you got lucky with your breed pick or individual dog personality. It’s amazing getting to see how this result actually comes about! Thanks:)

Hey Wendy! Love this comment! I also had no idea that a dog could sink so quickly at higher elevation so I learned something today too! And you're right - trips are so much more fun with a well-behaved pup along. Sometimes I worry in my videos that I'm just showing the same thing with different applications over and over again, so I appreciate the feedback that you like seeing the shaping process. It looks like a lot of effort, but once you get down to it, half an hour of training spread over a few sessions can be a game changer for a dog experiencing something new. Happy training!
