"different ways to do it"...."it" being the dog taking the toy or object in it's mouth?

DOGGY•U

Yes - in both cases the dog is taking the dumbbell in their mouth, it’s just where they are taking it from that’s different.

watching again before I actually start training this, Patty already plays with toys and if I present one to her she is likely going to grab it...I still want to start with the wooden dowel and do it from square 1. What if/when she grabs the object and wants to keep it? I obviously don't want to pull it out (she already sort of knows "release" to let go of a toy). Do I just click/reward that she grabbed it? If I click I'm sure she will let go as she's food motivated. Maybe I should rewatch video 2 as this is the step for holding. I don't want to rush through this first step. But I don't want to encourage her to drop it if she grabs it. Thoughts?

DOGGY•U

So you are clicking for grabbing it. The click is the terminus of the behavior. Don't let go of the dowel at all at first. So you are co-holding it. You click and then she should release and you feed, and then she grips again. At no point is she able to walk away with it because it's still in your hand. Does that make sense?

I’ve been working on this for a couple weeks and my dog (6 months) still won’t open his mouth for the object. He noses it, sometimes licks it, but every time I try to make him do more he gets frustrated and won’t return to it. Is there another way or step I should jump to? Or am I just not giving it long enough?

DOGGY•U

I would definitely mark and reward for licking it. But if that's not working, you can try moving it around a bit. And if that's not working, the "cheater" way I've done it for dogs that don't naturally want to engage, is to use a bully stick or similar stick style chew and mark and reward when they go to grip it. Feed, continue that pattern and then get a dowel that is similar size and do one mark for opening for the bully, then quickly switch next rep to the dowel, then back to the bully, until they're easily gripping it for the treat. Hope that helps!

So finally got round to getting a dumbbell as other objects I had were not the best and tried some of this with my Goldadour he got it fast only done two sessions so far and he grabs it but seams a little reluctant with the texture of the dumbell in his mouth. Is this something he will get used to or I was thinking of putting something like vetwrap on the middle of the dumbell to help with this. What would you recommend?

DOGGY•U

Yes you can absolutely work up to the plastic dumbbell by wraping in vet wrap or even painters tape (some dogs also don't like the feeling of the vet wrap. You could also cover in sheepskin, felt or other fabric to start, and then slowly decrease the use of the fabric by cutting it down. We often will wrap metal objects in painters tape to start and then slowly decrease the amount of tape once they have a stronger reinforcement history. Hope that helps!

Will the cheapest tier unlock part 2 and 3 of the series? I am trying to decide what tier I actually need to get the things I am interested in.

Debra Wilbourne

Hi, I'm looking for Part 2 of this series. Is it still available?

Debra Wilbourne

Find Part 2 by searching for "HOLD" if you don't see it in the listings

DOGGY•U

Hey Debra! I saw that you found it but it’s also in the “collections” tab under retrieve, or if you click the direct links at the bottom of the post.

I'm so lucky. My puppy will pick up anything I ask him to and put it right in my hand. He loves doing it. I trained get it, bring it and give with his toys and it has transfered beautifuly. He really enjoys using his mouth though. Super helpful. Thank you for the insightful video and explaination.

Claudia

I watched this video after your leash retrieve video. Walter knows a lot (but not all) of the foundation behaviors. I’m excited to see how quickly he understands the “games”. We are camping this weekend so we will have time to work on this. Thanks!

We are in the first week of training this skill, my dog bites the object about 8 out of 10 times but the rest of the time she just licks it. Should I mark for this too ? At what point does one need to be more stringent for the desired behaviour ?
